Thumbs down Jailbreak

Just this evening, I was finishing up dinner, when I heard some strange new squawks coming from my bedroom, where I keep the boys. My first thought was, "oh brother, there they go, bickering again." But just to be safe, I went to check on them after supper.

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw Mexico fluttering around the room, chirping loudly!

Turns out he had escaped from the holes in the cage where the food bowls go. It was rather stupid of me to leave those uncovered, but I never really thought about it! They are much bigger than 1/2 an inch. *facepalm*

Anyways, I slammed my bedroom door closed, as the rest of the house isn't bird-proof, opened the top door of their cage, and managed to get him back in within seconds. (Thanks in no small part to a huge spray of millet!)

Needless to say, once he was safely back in, I rushed off to find something to block the holes with. They will hopefully never be able to get out again.

I have checked him for injuries, and he seems to be fine, so... Crisis averted! Still, talk about a major fright! *shiver* My heart is still pounding!

Tia, I'm so glad that everything turned out fine despite the scare!
What did you cover the holes with?

Since that poses a significant danger to them in the future, especially if the holes aren't covered in a lasting manner, you may want to consider a new cage for them. It would be very upsetting if this were to happen again, I'm sure!

I'm glad everybudgie is okay!

I completely agree with you! I am trying to save up for an F040, but all these unexpected expenses keep popping up! (Good expenses though, like birthdays)

Edit: Forgot to say, I covered them with cardboard til I can find something safer and more permanent. Even I have a hard time pulling it out, so I doubt they'll be able to slide it out.

Oh Tia, I'm so happy to hear that everything turned out ok. I have had similar instances. We actually came home twice to find Pepper or Lyla sitting comfortably on their cages, waiting to go back in. No one else dared to come out while mommy or daddy wasn't present. But they were good about it, and didn't get into anything, and hopped right up onto my finger and back in without a hitch. I just thank god that they are both trained well enough to where they know their place when they're out. Talk about scary though! I'm glad it all worked out for you!

Tia, I'm glad Mexico is safe and sound! I bet Ice was thinking he was crazy .

When I had a Pix and Twigs my standard size budgies, I was shocked when I found they were able to get in and out of my parrot's 1" bar spaced cage quite easily. Raven is gentle with other birds thank goodness, but of course I never let that even happen again. It is amazing what a small space budgies can actually get through. Cardboard should be a good temporary fix, but don't be surprised if they find it a good chew toy! Fingers crossed you can get your 040 soon! Hey... maybe you can put it in your list to Santa?

Ha ha! I actually think Ice was trying to get out to join him!

Yes, I was rather shocked that he got out! (Obviously) I've had them for over a year now, so in some ways, I'm surprised they've never tryed it before. Kind of beating myself up over it.

My list to Santa! That's good! Nah, I'll get enough eventually.

Thank goodness you were home and checked.
A similar thing happened to me the other week, expect I think I didn't close the door properly. Came home after work to two budgies sitting on the lamp ( the one they aren't supposed to sit on!) - the window was open and so was the door. I was almost sick, and so so upset, so I totally get how you feel. You did everything right for them, thank goodness they are safe. Xx
