Default Hurricane Matthew Evacuation & Travel with 4 Budgies

Things have been so crazy lately! I have been loaded with university work and have a huge paper and midterm due and then Hurricane Matthew comes. We live on the East Coast of Florida so we left. We ended up having to travel all the way to ALABAMA because there were zero vacant hotels in Florida and Georgia.

Up to that point Emmy and Paris still hadn't been living in the same cage. They had been communicating side-by-side and having out of cage time together for two weeks. I had to rush and put them together in a small flight after rearranging all the toys so we could travel. Yazzi and Piccolo stayed in their flight and those two cages took up the whole trunk of the Jeep. We had to travel with both my vehicle and my husband's because 5 people, 5 birds, 2 dogs, and our luggage just weren't going to fit.

Needless to say, the budgies traveled like champs. Seriously, they did better than my dogs. Neither dog likes the car and one gets carsick. He vomited in the back seat.

Anyway, we got home and after traveling 976 miles together they're all best buds. I finally have all four budgies in my extra large flight.

We lost power for only a short 3 days and besides lots of yard cleanup had no major damage to the house.

Here they are!

Tiffanie,

I'm sure traveling with two vehicles and trying to get through all the traffic from the evacuation wasn't fun at all.
I hope both dogs are feeling better now that they are back home. It's definitely good to hear you sustained no major damage.

I'm glad the budgies all traveled well and are now living happily together in the large flight cage!

Despite the stress of the whole situation, it's good to know that things went well for the most part and that you are now safely back home.
I hope by now your dogs are fully recovered from the ordeal.

I'm so glad everyone is okay! (excluding the poor dog who got sick in the car!)
I get nervous traveling an hour to the vet with my birds. I can't imagine how stressful the experience was for you and the flock
But I'm glad everything went well

That was/is a nasty hurricane. I hear it's gearing up to hit Burmuda now. I am glad to hear a good story out of all the bad it caused. I can't believe it's not over yet. If it comes back around to the states you could have more stress. I haven't checked lately, but I saw where it was a possibility. That's a nice big cage. I'm looking to move up into a size similar to yours. Or maybe even build an indoor aviary. I ramble. Anyway, glad to hear you got through without any major issues....except long travel for a room. I used to live in Florida, and would just hop from the west coast to the east coast when a hurricane came through on the west side. Was in Punta Gorda for Charlie, and had grapefruit fly like missiles through the walls. Crazy.

Hi Tiffanie, I'm glad to hear that everybudgie did well during the trip and that the rest of the family is doing well, too!

I hope the dogs are feeling better; it's good that the budgies are all living together with no problems. I'm glad that you were spared the worst of the hurricane.

Thanks everyone! Yes, it was rushed. We packed and left in 24 hours. I've been through evacuations before (I was born and raised right here on the Space Coast), but it was all brand new for my husband, who is from Michigan.
The dogs were fine once they got out of the car. Between getting in and out for all the rest stops they started jumping in and out of the car themselves. It was nice not having to pick up two 50 and 60 pound dogs every time.
We just about have everything back in order. Took the chance to sort of clean house while we were re-organizing.
