Is this safe for my pair of trouble makers?
A few days ago we added a new mirror to the cage which is suspended by a chain. The mirror is great fun but they seem to love the chain more.
I was thinking of making the cage door in to a drawbridge using the thinner chain in the picture attached. The thicker chain I was thinking of using to just dangle in a corner so they can fuss over it. I have used two coins to show the scale of the chain. A pound coin and a quarter.
The chain or links have never been used for anything before and I intend to soak them in bird safe disinfectant overnight before I do anything with them.
Any advice would be appreciated.
The chain has to be stainless steel or, I think, chrome for it to be safe. Most chain has zinc in it which is poisonous for birds (heavy metal poisoning).
Generally, mirrors are not recommended as budgies can become obsessed with them. Shredding toys or wooden toys are better choices. :)
Please take the time to review the information in this link:
Be careful that you choose safe metals when using any metal fixtures in your birds' cage. Heavy metal poisoning is a very real concern for our budgies.
With regard to using chain as a toy, I would use plastic links rather than metal.
The idea of making the cage door into a "drawbridge" doesn't sound as though that would be very safe for the birds. :S
