Default Quarantine budgie wants to join his friends

My new budgie Calcifer is in quarantine, in a cage on the far side of the house from my other 2. I've had him for three days now.

He is settling in pretty well, eating, drinking, preening, occasionally playing with a toy, but my problem is that he can hear my two other budgies (who are on the other side of the house). I think this is why he spends a large amount of time trying to get out of his cage, he wants to join them.

He runs back and forth on the side of the cage closest to where the other budgies are, sometimes gnawing on the bars or shoving his head against the bars. I'm guessing he's going on the sounds he can hear. They're pretty loud even if I close the doors between them. He does this quite a bit, enough to make me worry.

His in a pretty big flight cage, about 20 inches long and 12 inches high and wide.

I play him bird sounds, which soothed him at first but now no longer seems to work. I've tried giving him a mirror toy, he's ignored it so far...maybe that will help eventually.

Does anyone have experience with this? Should I just ignore his behavior and hope he settles down?

Here he is

Congratulations on your new budgie!

In order to muffle the sound of the back and forth flock calls/budgie singing and to decrease the anxiety from your new budgie into wanting to join your flock, you can close the doors to both rooms your budgies are in.
Having some music on or the sound of the TV can also be helpful in keeping Calcifer from hearing your other budgies. It's best to not play budgie sounds as that will increase his eagerness to look for the flock.

To help him settle in, you can also cover the cage on 3 sides (leaving front part uncovered).

Hopefully soon, Calcifer will calm down. Good luck!

Thanks, Aluz

Music is a great idea. I've been keeping the doors closed but music might do the trick. I hadn't considered that the recorded bird sounds might also be stirring him up.

If that doesn't help I will try to move his cage to my husbands workroom which should be out of earshot. Not sure if B will mind! But it's only for a few weeks

I've been keeping his cage half covered with a cloth. He's still a bit skittish but not too bad.

Hi!

Calcifer sure is a cute little fellow!!
aluz has offered you excellent advice to help him get through the quarantine period.

Are your other two budgies male as well?
What are the dimension of the cage in which the two budgies are housed?
Length x Width x Height

https://talkbudgies.com/housing-budgi...age-sizes.html
https://talkbudgies.com/housing-budgi...reat-cage.html

I would remove the mirror from the cage. Budgies can quickly become obsessed with their reflection.
Instead, spend time with him each day talking, singing or reading to him.
Show him how to play with his toys and enjoy the one-on-one time you have with him.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of little Calcifer in the days to come.

Calcifer is adorable and I love his name as well

Do your other two budgies have names of the same theme?

You've been given great advice and I'm sure that soon he'll settle down with some music as well.

Be sure to update us on him, I look forward to keep updated on him

Thanks!

Yes, my other two budgies are male as well. They are Zumbador and Elmore, just random names

They have a cage more or less the same size as Calcifers but they actually spend very little time in the cage, only put themselves away at night. The rest of the time they are out in the room. When the time comes I'll join the two cages together into one big cage, I've got it set up like that.

My previous measurements were a guestimate I've measured the cages more carefully now - each cage is 30 inches long, 16 inches high and 18 inches deep. When I join them together they are 60 inches long.

I'll avoid the mirror. I was worried about exactly that thing, that he'd get fixated on it. I have my laptop set up just next to the cage and as I work from home, I hope we'll work out a good relationship He's already nibbled my finger and let me stroke his beak. He seems quite a lot bolder than my other budgies.

Thank you for providing the additional information.

I'm sure Calcifer will really enjoy being your work supervisor during the time he's in quarantine.
It's great that you'll be able to interact with him while you are working.
