Default Young male not happy in his cage

I haven't posted here for years, as my dear little friend (Sven) was such a fine and healthy bird, and didn't give me a care in the world. Sadly, soon after reaching ten years old, he suddenly got very sick, and died nearly three weeks ago.

It was a VERY sad time for me, but last week I ventured out and got a new bird. He (I hope) is about five weeks old I think. He actually flew for the first time when he escaped from my hand in the shop, and transitioned into seeds and veg as soon as he got home.

He is lovely, and bonded with me in about ten seconds (he thinks my teeth are a beak!), but .... When he is in his cage he spends all the time clambering around and flying - actually crashing around ... His cage very quickly becomes a mess, with him landing in and kicking food, but I worry about him injuring himself.

Until last night he would climb up high in the cage and sleep soundly when I covered the cage with a cloth. But last night he wouldn't stop his antics, even when covered. In the end he settled down and spent the night on the floor of the cage, but I heard him walking around in the night. (I am sleeping near him, on the sofa, until he becomes less manic).

Any ideas on what I can do to help him calm down in his cage while I am out in the day - and to settle down before sleeping?

In the daytime he is constantly near me, and his flying and landing are slowly improving.

Saul is a beautiful little fella.

It's not uncommon for birds to be a little unsettled when they first come home.
Try to make sure that you don't clutter his cage up too much while he's settling in so if he does flutter about, he's less likely to injure himself.

Work on a routine to help him settle. Getting him up the same time every day, letting him out a few hours at the same time daily etc.

Try reducing the amount of seed in his cage or offering it at set times of the day to reduce waste and stop over eating.

As he's so new to your home, there's nothing to worry about with the behaviour. It's just a new bird settling down.

You have my deepest sympathies over your Sven's passing.

To help your new little fellow to settle, you can cover his cage on 3 sides (leaving front part uncovered) and having some soothing music on for him.
I agree that having Saul on a set routine and have a good balance between the time spent in and out of the cage would be the best approach, so that later on you won't have problems with Saul rejecting his cage or not being able to entertain himself on the cage when you are too busy to give your full attention to him or when you are not home.

Best of luck with little Saul!

I'm very sorry for your recent loss of Sven.

Therm and aluz have given you excellent advice.

Baby Saul is an adorable little fellow and I'm sure he'll settle into a good routine with your help soon.

I'm so sorry over your loss for sven.
Like the others have said, its quite common for new budgies to feel a little antsy or even shy and reserved when they first come home. I wouldn't worry too much there.

I used to let my budgies around my mouth when I first got them too; though have learned from other birth enthusiasts and my avian vet that it is not a very good thing to do. Our mouths have a lot of bacteria that they aren't ever really exposed to and our saliva has enzymes in it that their little tummys just cannot digest. I'd discourage him from going near your mouth in the future. As hard as that is! lol, my budgies beg and try to take the food right out of my mouth sometimes when I'm snacking and they're on my shoulders.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of your little guy! His colors are so pretty!

He is slowly getting better! At night he calms down after about 20 minutes, then settles for the night. If he is in cage when I am home, I have to cover the front - if he can see me, he goes ballistic again!

He loves me too much ......

However .... for those bonkers times I had to take drastic measures to stop him trashing his food and water!

I built a little wooden shelf over his food trays, and bought a nifty water pot - which has the drinking opening hidden under another wooden shelf.

Without these, he would slide/crash down onto them.

Komatsuna is hit and miss (literally). ...
