Default Big boy cage

I've had Syd just over two weeks now and finally got his cage set up.
We're at the stage where he will warily stretch to nibble millet held near him so I really didn't want to have to catch him in order to move cages. Vision cages are wider at the base which unfortunately meant I couldn't get both cage doors flush against each other and so had to improvise with a cardboard passage between cages

But after about half an hour and numerous aborted landings, he finally gathered the courage to satisfy his curiosity and made it through

That's awesome and very well done on finding a clever solution with the cardboard tunnel to facilitate the move!
Syd seems to be quite pleased with his new palace!

That's a great way to encourage Syd to move.
Syd looks so happy.

Well done! Syd was very brave in crossing the drawbridge into his new awesome kingdom.

That looks great! What plant do you have growing in the cage? I'd love to have live plants

Wow, what a great cage for your little guy!

How clever it was to build the little cardboard tunnel, I'm glad your little guy had the courage to go through!

Great job

Thanks everyone, I was both relieved and proud of him being brave enough to go through. He stayed in the left hand side of the cage yesterday, with the perches he recognised but today has decided that boings are actually good fun.

The plant is flat leaf parsley (one of the potted herbs that supermarkets sell) - my canary has tried lots of different herbs attached to the outside of her cage. They usually last a couple of weeks, if you top up the water for them.

This quarantine business is really difficult - needs a lot of self control. Syd is desperate to get to that other bird in the house even though when they eventually meet, I'm sure she'll only want a passing "hello" from him and none of this needy "Will you be my buddy? Are we friends?" nonsense. I'm coming to the conclusion that the best toy for a budgie, is another budgie!

You probably are aware of this but it is still worth mentioning for other members/guests who read your thread.

Parsley and Spinach should be fed to budgies only in moderation as both inhibit the absorption of calcium.

To be honest, I knew that of parsley but not of spinach.

Yes, it's good that you should make that point there.
There is so much conflicting information on the net regarding herbs. For the benefit of other readers, here are a couple of sites mentioning them:

Fresh herbs - Healthy nutrition for budgies - Birds Online

Parsley poisonous to hook bills

In the first site, it also mentions aromatic herbs irritating mucosa but doesn't include basil. Other sites do. All very confusing.

In my case, I've just decided to view this with the same 'a little of everything, variety is the spice of life' type of attitude that I get when bamboozled with human food news (red wine is good for you/ now bad for you/ now ok at this level etc). I rotate which herbs are there and always have a couple of other veggies present too. My canary seems happy and healthy (egg shells ok) so I'll keep a close eye on what quantity Syd is eating.

Thanks for adding that FaeryBee!

You are absolutely correct -- variety is important and moderation is key!
