Question Budgie/Birdie play dates

My husband and I have just returned from a week long trip and had boarded the budgies at their vet. While there, there were several other budgies, some canaries, a cockatiel, a bourke's parakeet, and a mourning dove. In the 'big bird' room next room over, there's a long term boarder named Zeus who's a sulphur crested cockatoo who calls to the little ones.
Sweetie and Lemon had an amazing time! Sweetie especially loved being around other birds to talk and sing with and made great friends with the cockatiel in the cage next to theirs, ChiChi,who is 25 years old!
My husband and I were talking about it and I wonder if it would be a terrible idea to board them at the vet one weekend a month so they can have that other bird interaction in a safe enviroment. Sweetie apparently was so naughty, getting everybirdie started up in a sing/talk party at least once a day.
What do you peeps think? Good idea? Weird idea? It never would have occured to me if it wasn't for the fact my two seem to have such a great time about it; Sweetie's got another new whistle and a new phrase I can't quite make out. Would you send your budgie to 'Birdie Day Camp' as it were?

It's great that they had such a great time while you were away.

The only thing I'd be apprehensive about is your birds picking anything up from another bird as you don't know the history of the other birds there.
I'd be worried that doing it so often would potentially expose them to something harmful.

That's my main concern. All the birds are required to have had a recent full check up and treatment for mites at my vet though, which is why I'm seriously considering it.

Even though it is at your vet's office, it isn't something I would want to engage in on a regular basis.

I can see doing it for boarding if you are going to be away for a vacation as you need someone that can give your birds good care during that time.

But... to continually subject them to possible illnesses on a regular basis is not something I would personally be comfortable with.

People in hospitals frequently get secondary infections because of all the bacteria and illness to which they are exposed.
I would be concerned about the same situation in a vet's office.
(Then again, I don't even like leaving my dogs at the kennel knowing that all the boarders are up-to-date on their shots!)

I know everyone else has touched base on the disease front, but another thing I would be concerned about is the potential breakdown of the bond you're encouraging.

If your circumstances change and you can no longer take them for these 'playdates', whether it be due to health reasons, the vet closes down, or you shift away - your birds would be heartbroken.

Since I own more than one bird, I'd rather they just have each other and I wouldn't feel right encouraging a bond that isn't guaranteed to be a long-term one

*sigh* Therm, Deb, I know you're right. I was just overly hopeful because Sweetie had such a good time and while I know he's very happy with how his life is now, I know he'd be super happy to have as many birds as possible to be friends with.
I am very happy to have a good avian vet to board the budgie bebes with and will just daydream about playdates and/or a giant aviary with budgie friends for Sweetie and Lemon.

Had you tried playing different types of bird songs for him? Like wild birds or things like that?

*cough* *cough* You could see if there is a parrot rescue near you that needs help fostering birds. Sounds like Sweetie would be a great host.

Oh yeah, I play videos for them on my phone (so now when they see my phone they get all excited). I also play budgie videos on instagram; Sweetie is so in love with Reggie and Buster from @reggie_the_budgie he knows their voices and will search high and low for my phone if you hide it while one of their videos are playing.

Both my avian vets have said he's a very happy little guy right now, he'd just be even happier in a big flock. I like to think each and every one of us here at TB want to optimize their budgie's happiness.

My husband has said no more birds though which is why I don't go out and adopt two more.

I would in a heartbeat but my husband says no more birds.
