Default Possessive bites?

I've had my budgies for about three months. One male and one female. Taming has been a long process but we're getting there. My question is this: they like to eat out my hand, but if the female tries to get near me or on my hand while he is eating, he turns toward my fingers and bites the heck out of me. Why is he biting me when she gets close? Is he taking it out on my finger? Confused? Is that some strange way he is claiming me?

Sometimes when I play with my budgie's toy he goes crazy and attacks it. I always thought we were playing a game, but maybe it's something similar?

Hi! to Talk Budgies

It sounds as if Oliver is showing his dominance by attacking your hand, rather than attacking Louisa when she comes close to the food in your hand. It is a sort of territorial possessiveness.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

Hi there and to the forums!

I agree with FaeryBee with regards to Oliver's biting Perhaps having two hands holding treats will help? Other than that, be sure to look through the Budgie Behavior and Taming and Bonding sections of the forums, which may give you some more tips. These subforums and others can be found among the resources provided above, so be sure to read through them.

If you have any questions afterwards, don't hesitate to ask as we'd love to help.

I hope to meet Oliver and Louisa soon!

Cheers!

I was having issues with my budgie biting as well, however I did learn a lot from the stickies about aggressive and territorial behavior... and how to recognize it, manage it & avoid it. And accept it as a communication tool used by budgies to learn from.
