Default Budgie opening mouth

Hi all, we have had Mort our new budgie for about a week now he is very friendly and happy we have been taking it easy on the contact and mainly talking and singing to him close to his cage the past couple of days I have noticed he opens his mouth when I am talking/singing to him and was wondering if anyone else knew if I am stressing him out or if he is trying to join in.

Is the action of opening the beak done in a successive manner as if the budgie is panting? If so, then this can be a sign that your budgie is overheating (accompanied with the wings moving further away from the body).
When budgies are momentarily scared by a sudden loud noise or stressed by a given situation, they can also pant and this will usually only last a couple of minutes till they settle back to normal.

When Mort opens the beak, does it seem like she is chewing something and you hear little crackling noises? That is called beak grinding and it means your budgie is happy and content. Budgies will usually do this when getting ready to nap or sleep for the night.

If your Mort only opens the beak occasionally when you talk to her and if by looking at the body language she seems perfectly at ease, then you have nothing to worry about.

In order to have a better idea on what panting and beak grinding looks like, you can go to Youtube and type "beak grinding budgie", "panting budgie".

Hi there

Thank you for the reply no he is not panting or beak grinding. If anything it looks like he is trying to talk back to me but he doesn't talk yet so it is silent mouthing.

In that case, then Mort is enjoying the time you spend with her and is reacting to your voice and making that connection by occasionally opening her beak.
Mort is reacting to your form of communication.
Maybe soon Mort will start to let out a few sweet little chirps in response.

aluz provided good information and I'm glad you've determined that your budgie is simply silently mouthing at this time.

Best wishes!
