Hello everyone, my baby English Budgie Potus is now 10 weeks old. We have had him for 2 weeks now. He steps up readily and doesn't mind being handled. When he is out of his cage, approximately 4-5 hours a day, he either perches on my hand, his play gym, or my computer while I am on it. He looks at me when I talk to him and allows me to rub his head and pet him. So my question is: I have offered him numerous toys and he takes not one bit of interest in them or in playing at all. He just sits wherever he is perched like a little bump and watches us unless he is eating. He only sings if he hears a recording of other birds. Is this just because he is young and new to our family? Am I expecting too much too soon? Thank you for any advice!
Your budgie has not yet learned how to play with toys so it is going to be up to you to teach him how much fun they can be.
Perhaps start with a toy with a bell on it.
You can play with it, ring the bell and make excited, happy noises when you are doing so.
The same goes for the other toys you want to introduce him to.
You might also want to begin some positive reinforcement and/or clicker training at this point.
Well thank you FaeryBee! I never realized I had to actually TEACH him to play! I have four daughters but he is my first and only feathered baby.. I'll start reading up on the clicker training! Thank you so much!
