Default Does this look like a nervous budgie to you...?

I was looking back at some video I took from the very first weeks that I brought Biz home. This video was probably about 2 weeks into having him, no more than three.

To me, he looks pretty nervous and uncomfortable. His feathers are very flat and he sort of looks like he's "on guard" or "on watch" for danger. He looks like he's nervously (and quietly) looking around to make sure there is no trouble. And he seems to be looking at me like... "are you going to eat me...?"

See what you think....

I thought it was interesting looking back, because at the time I was observing him, but I really didn't know what was going on, as he is my first budgie. And I've done a lot more research since then. (And have watched him grow and settle in.)

Here we are now... close to 3 months in. Here's a brief clip of Biz saying a very muffled "pretty bird" ---

Here he is coming when called. (Not consistent. He can generally only do this when he wants the millet badly enough. )

Oh wow, you've come so far in such a short time, that's amazing!
Congratulations! And he's talking too.... you must, quite rightly, feel very pleased with yourself (& little Biz) I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort, I hope I'll get there eventually!
Such a cute little budgie!
Well done I'm so glad that the hard work has paid off for you.

You did a good interpretation in reading your budgie's body language.
It's true that in the first video, Biz was more on alert mode.
You have been doing a remarkable job with your budgie boy and I'm glad the bond you have with him has been improving so much over time and may it continue that way!

Hi JRS.... thanks for looking at the videos! I think because I'm new at this...I don't really know what to expect, so on the one hand, I think I've been happy that good things are happening and it seems like we've bonded and it's a lot of fun.... but sometimes I think I'm kind of like... "I *hope* this is going well." .... I think I was lucky that Biz was relatively laid back when I brought him home... I think I lucked out that he has a nice personality. He was easy to step-up, and wasn't overly nervous or skittish. That was just luck on my part.

I think it's harder to bond with an older budgie vs. a full-on baby budgie. Biz was between 4 and 5 months when I brought him home (an approximation but probably pretty close) and I think it's a different bond with a budgie that age vs. one that is very much a baby, say 2 to 3 months old. He was never really a "baby," so he's a little bit more independent and less "affectionate" that some budgies I see. But, that may also just be personality as well.

I've spent a fair amount of time with Biz, and he's taught me a lot about patience. I'm generally a patient person, but he helped me take it to another level. [ As I write this he is taking the kale in his cage and throwing it on the floor because I left his door open. He's grabbing the pieces and throwing them on the floor. ]

Your Syd is very beautiful and looks like you acquired him at a very young age and since you're on these forums you clearly want to learn all the best practices so undoubtedly I'm sure it will go very well with you & Syd. I look forward to seeing more pics of him.

Thanks Aluz...! In the beginning he would do that move a lot and he doesn't do it anymore. I never see that. There was a period where I would look at him completely confounded and have no idea. ...He would chirp back if I spoke with him, but it wasn't a happy chirp. It was more like an "Ack! Who are you? Ack! Why are you talking to me? Ack!!"

Here's a video of him doing more of the nervous thing... it's just sort of interesting to watch now. He just doesn't look relaxed at all (*pls. note some of these videos might still have dowel perches as I was awaiting for the natural branches to arrive.)

Here's a thing he did for about a week or so... and it really confused me.
I thought it was pretty strange. ...He would go to the edge of the top of his cage, and do a dance with his feet. I wasn't sure if couldn't keep his balance that close to the edge which is why he was doing that odd little dance... or, in hindsight, it might have been the scaly feet mites bothering him. (Or some combination of both.) Those mites are all gone now. Yay!

I agree, you can definitely see how much he's grown to be comfortable and trust you now from when you first got him.

It's funny how glaringly obvious it becomes after you already know and recognize their body language from interacting with them!

Exactly.... ! Thanks for watching!

It's funny to think back on how confused I was. I just keep thinking... "What are you doing?" "What do you want?" "Is there something wrong with you?"

... There was one point where I'm sure I thought he had brain damage. No... not even close. : ) He's the king of the castle and very clever.

Thanks again for checking it out.
