We have been planning to adopt a second budgie since we first got our girl Kikker. We wanted a hand-raised male with pied mutation and have been contacting breeders in the Netherlands for weeks to find "the one". Yesterday, we went to a pet shop to buy some supplies for Kikker, and somehow ended up with a new baby budgie: Huckleberry Finn!
I know this is a typical story and still does not justify putting money in careless pet shops owners' pockets, but this is how it went: There were nearly 15 budgies crammed into a tiny cage, constantly fighting over food and space. It broke our heart and we decided to rescue one. Huck was the youngest in the cage. He misses his tail feathers and the tips of his primary flight feathers are pretty roughed up. But otherwise he looks and acts healthy. We will still keep him in quarantine for 45 days to protect Kikker and in the mean time try to bond with him.
This morning he got a millet spring for breakfast. I didn't think he would eat because of the stress of being in a new place, but he immediately started munching! Then Kikker and Huck started calling each other across our apartment. Huck's baby chirps are so adorable!
I keep saying "he" but I'm not sure about the gender. He looks like a boy to me. Any ideas? (I started another thread about this question but didn't get a definitive answer yet.)
Again a guess, but I think he's about 8 weeks old. What do you think?
In any case, we think Huck is very beautiful and we're looking forward to gaining his trust.
