Question Houdini, budgie reincarnate

Hey budgie buddies, I just got a new budgie yesterday; she's an albino, pretty sure it's a girl, I'll attach some pictures.

Anyway, since this morning she's been actively trying to escape from her cage and succeeded twice. (which is why I'm naming her Houdini) She's even resorted to lifting up the doors where the food and drink cups are. I've locked those down with some thin wire and put a towel over the cage roof to prevent her from looking for areas where the bar spacing is big enough for her to squeeze through, which is how she escaped twice today. Now she just bites the towel, and bites at random bars. I also clipped her wings just so she doesn't fly away into some high spot if she does manage to escape again.

Is this normal new budgie behavior? My cage is somewhat old, about 6 years but it's never fallen apart or had any budgie escape like this one does?

Hi Nishi and to the forums!

Houdini is beautiful

However, it's concerning that she's already managed to escape twice.

It is normal for new budgies to want to try and "escape" their cage--they don't see it as their home yet, although they will as they settle in.

However, there should never be any space for them to escape through. Tying down the "guillotine style" doors by the food and water is a great thing to do. I would use plastic zip ties for doors you don't open and plastic or wooden clips for the other ones. Without knowing that the wire is made of a safe metal for budgies, it is not a safe thing to have in the cage.

If she's escaping through the cage bars, then they are not the right size for your little one. The cage bars should be no further than half an inch apart to ensure she doesn't get stuck or go through the bars.

Be sure to check out these links for more information:

https://talkbudgies.com/housing-budgi...reat-cage.html

Meanwhile, I hope your little girl settles in well! Playing some soft music for her as well as covering her cage partway with a sheet will help her feel safer.

To prevent her injury, you should look for a new cage for her immediately. The minimum size it should be is 18 inches by 18 inches by 18 inches, which is also included in the links above.

Be sure to update us on how she's doing!

Also, please do read through the many other articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care

Cheers, and hope to see you around!

I've been on these forums before, just remade my account. My cage is a budgie/cockatiel cage, the spacing is 1/2 between bars and is 20 x 16 x 29 inches, hope that's ok. I think she escaped bc it gets handled by the roof and so some of the bars bent a little wider, but i made sure there are no more spaces like that! She is also young, and small and slender! She barely managed to escape but I caught her before she could fly around the house.

She is a girl right? lol

If you'd like, you can PM me your old username and we can merge it with this one

I'm glad you've ensured there are no more bent bars she can slip through.

However, I would still consider getting her a new cage Is it the house shaped cockatiel cage from PetCo? We have that cage for our dove and it's decent, but bigger is always bigger if you can afford it.

Oh, and yes, she's a girl

I would love a new cage lol. And yes, it's a ranch style cockatiel cage I started out with when I first got budgies 6 years ago. I actually went to two flea markets yesterday looking for a new cage but all I found was one identical to mine but I will still look for a new one!

Keep an eye on Amazon Warehouse deals. There are occasionally phenomenal deals, and frequently good ones.

Hi,

Your little Houdini is beautiful.

Please contact me and let me know what your previous User ID was on the forums. Members are allowed only one User ID and I need to merge the two IDs as soon as possible.

With regard to cages, there are many sales going on this week.
As I'm sure you want only what is best for your budgies, it is important you find one you can afford and get it for your birds' safety and well-being.

Prevue Hendryx F040

The cage in this link is the minimum recommended size for two budgies:
Prevue Cage suitable for two Budgies

This is the same type cage from a different supplier:
PetCo Flight Cage

I highly recommend the F040 for your two budgies as bigger is always better.
