Default How to catch a terrified budgie

Hey guys, I have to take my Winston to the vets because he has been squeaking/scratching when he is breathing, he is also fluffed up and not looking too good.

I want to know the least traumatising way to catch him and transport him. He his housed with my other budgie Charlie who is tame. Is it a good idea to take both for minimum stress? They are totally in love with eachother. Winston is terrified of humans.

What should I carry him to the vets in? A cage or a box? I'm worried the stress might kill him. They won't do home visits because I am getting his treatments through the Blue Cross.

Hope someone help.

Welcome to the forums,

The least stressful way would be to have a small travel cage to use for vet visits. Since Charlie is tame, you can make him step up onto your finger and place him on the small cage. Then you place the small cage at the same level as the regular cage and have both doors open, in order to entice Winston to move into it on his own accord. To make this more appealing, you can place your budgie's favourite treats on the small cage.
For the travel, you can cover the cage on 3 sides in order to reduce the stress levels.

Another way to do this would be to try to gently catch Winston by using a small cloth.

Best of luck with everything, I hope your Winston has a steady and full recovery.

Hi there and to the forums!

aluz has given some excellent advice and resources. I hope to hear more about how the vet visit goes! Hopefully, he will be cured very soon.

You couldn't have come to a better place to learn even more about budgie care, and share about your little ones, too. We'd love to meet your budgies when you get a chance!

Meanwhile, if you have any questions after reading though all the links provided, be sure to ask as we'd love to help

Hope to see you around!

Let us know how the vet visit goes, and I hope your own hospital visit is successful.

If you remember your old username, you can PM it to FaeryBee and she will merge those two accounts for you
