Default Weird behavior?

Hey ya'll!

I recently got a cute baby budgie. She's about 5 months old and her name is Neeli. Things have been going pretty smoothly for the past month that I've had her but just now I've started to notice some weird behavior. All of the sudden she's started to bite me a lot and get pretty aggressive. Sometimes she starts moving really quickly from side to side on her perch, bobbing her head, and very erratically moving like she about to attack, jutting her head out suddenly at nothing (to the point where she's about to fall off her perch). This is all completely unprovoked, like no one will even be near her cage. Sometimes when she begins to do this I try to go near her and talk to her but she gets even more 'excited'(?) and if I put my hand in the cage she bites. I don't really know what's going on. I've read online that some of this behavior might be due to molting? (which may be a possibility since I'm seeing more shed feathers than usual), but attacking the air, twitching/moving very suddenly is not something I haven't read about anywhere.

Anyone have a clue what might be happening?

Hi Sana and to the forums!

Neeli sounds like a cutie! However, I understand where you're coming from with the sudden behavioral changes. All budgies go through a hormonal stage where they are very excitable and exhibit lots of those behaviours, such as head bobbing, and also are very irritable, when they bite. This is caused by their ascent into adulthood, and is known as the "teen" stage of a budgies life. It usually begins at 5-6 months of age, before they begin to settle into their life as an adult budgie.

Check out this link for more information, including what you can do to help her through this period:

Meanwhile, you'll find lots of great resources around here, so be sure to read through everything to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care practices. If you have any questions afterwards, please do ask as we'd love to help!

Hope to see you and Neeli around!
