Default Looking for small time parakeet breeder

Hello

I'm looking for a reputable small time parakeet breeder. Someone who does it as a hobby and doesn't sell tons of different types of birds. One that hand tames their parakeet babies and has quality blood lines that don't come from big-box pet stores like Petco.

I would prefer someone within driving distance (2 hours) from washington dc OR someone who ships safely and responsibly. Looking to buy a female.

Thanks so much!

Midori

Hi Midori...

One of the site moderators recommended these breeders to me when I was asking about this for a neighbor:

Feathers First Aviary in PA ships according to their website:

Also, I had been researching breeders prior to receiving those references, and in my online research, I came across Sissy's Bird Colony near Richmond, Virginia.

Here's the website: Home

I know nothing more than what I've read on the website. Seems like they might be worth a phone call to chat about how they do things, and if the birds might be what you're seeking?

(The reviews on the site seem good... but of course they would be. Worth a read however.)

(*the one thing that concerns me is how many budgies Sissy's Bird Colony has in one cage in the picture of the parent-raised parakeets. (They also have hand-raised.) I can only hope she put them in the cage for the purpose of a photo.)

Thanks so much for your reply!

I had contacted Sissy's bird colony. She was very nice but I felt it was a bit too large for the kind of more intimate breeding i'm looking for. She has 300 birds and has them all in one cage from what she said. She does not pair them up.

Any other suggestions? It's so hard to find a good small time breeder.

Wow....yeah, I don't think that I would want a bird from 300 in a cage. I think that way, there's no way to mitigate in-breeding.

I would make a phone call the the breeders FaeryBee sent to me on another thread. Call them and explain your situation and what you're seeking, & let is know how it goes. I know others would be interested. Thx.....!

So I think she has 300 total, including other species.

As far as how many parakeets I'm not too sure. But the parakeets are in the same cage, but not 300

Definitely do not purchase from Sissy's Bird Colony.
It sounds as if she is indiscriminately colony breeding which is never recommended by this forum due to the inherent dangers and risks. I can only assume this is a "birdie mill" and even the name with "Colony" in it sends up red flags!

Decisions About Breeding Related Birds

You can try Cute Little Birdies Aviary in Akron, Ohio.
However, Lindsey generally has a long waiting list and hasn't been setting up many breeding pairs in the last couple of years.
I don't know what her plans are for the coming year.

Gotcha.

I'm reposting / re-directing you to these resources provided by one of this site's very experienced and long-time moderators. it's in this thread. (Will recopy below.)

If I were in your shoes, I would call the referred breeders first, explain your goals and then launch your expedition from there. And I can see FaeryBee also recommended, in addition, that you could call Cute Little Birdies.

You now have 3 places you can call. If they can't help you.. perhaps they know someone who can! Please keep us posted. I know many are curious about this from the other thread I started about this same matter.
