Default How are you budgies with vegetables?

Hi all,

Just wondering how your budgies are with vegetables? The reason I ask is before we got the birds we read a lot of material about what is good for them. The tone always seemed to be 'TRY' to get your birds to eat vegetables.

Our pair can't get enough of them! Specifically sweet potato. Next up is spinach, then possibly carrot. Has anybody got any other suggestions for what they may go nuts for?

Attached is a picture of poor Deacon staining his feathers under his beak on sweet potato. We thought we could trust him with a little bowl of shavings. Tsk, tsk, naughty Deacon!

Very cute!

My budgie loves organic kale, broccoli, and wheatgrass. He'll eat carrot but doesn't go crazy for it like he does greens. ... I've never tried sweet potato. I'll have to give that a go... I could be wrong about this, but I think spinach is supposed to be in limited to quantities. (Not sure though). I've also tried bok choy. But kale seems to be the hands down favorite.

I shall give kale a try!

You absolutely must try sweet potato. Our two absolutely destroy it and then go hunting for any remains left over.

Spinach is given to them in a relatively small dose. 2 leaves each of moderate size (not sure if that is right). The main reason for this is it has quite an effect on the sand sheet in the bottom of the cage!

My budgie goes nuts for kale, he likes lettuce and also broccoli too but not a lot of broccoli as they can get addicted. He refuses to eat any other vegetables.

My girl likes any and all leafy greens, as well as corn (we give her frozen thawed corn).

You should give budgies some type of veggies every day; the reason spinach should be limited is because it binds to calcium and prevents the absorption of calcium, which can have serious consequences in excess.

By the way, if you have sand sheets at the bottom of the cage, you should remove them! Plain newspaper works just fine, and any sandpaper (like cage liners or perch covers) contain harmful glue and sand that is abrasive to budgie feet and can cause crop impaction.
