Default Meet Frost!

Hi everyone! My name is Tracy and my 12 year old son, Luke, just got his very first parakeet last night. We were told that he is 4 months old. My son named him Frost. The lady at the pet store said it was too early to determine if he's a boy or girl. (Luke's hoping he's a boy!). We are trying to read everything we can find about caring for parakeets and are so happy we came across this website and forum! LOTS of awesome information here!

One question I have about adding another parakeet: we bought Frost from a locally owned pet store and he was in a cage with several other parakeets. We will most likely get a second parakeet next week from the same place. Since they have been in the same cage together already, is it still necessary to quarantine?

Frost is already starting to show signs of getting a little more comfortable with us. Last night, he kept his back to us the whole time, but today, he faces us and has even mimicked my son's clucking noises a couple times, and chirped a few times quietly when he heard a video of other parakeets chirping. He hasn't eaten or drank any water yet, so hopefully he will later today. We bought the same seed mix that the store has been feeding, and have also offered some spray millet, but he hasn't eaten any just yet.

I'm sure we will have all kinds of other questions in the next several days/weeks/months, so thank you in advance for being patient with us!

Hi there and to the forums!

You've definitely come to the right place to learn even more about these cute little birds

Congratulations on your new family member, your son looks very excited to have Frost as his new birdy friend

It's not too early to tell if Frost is a boy or a girl, young males have pink to purplish ceres (the area above their beak) with a pearly sheen while young females have whitish to pale blue ceres

If you post a photo of his cere taken in natural light, we'll be able to confirm his gender for you

Meanwhile, be sure to read through all of the forum's Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care.

Here's a few to get you started!
https://talkbudgies.com/general-budgi...-stickies.html
https://talkbudgies.com/housing-budgi...reat-cage.html

If you have any questions after reading though everything, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help.

Hope to see you and Frost around the forums!

Hopefully this is a better picture to determine sex. If not, I'll try to get one after I get home from work tonight. Thanks!!

I'd take a stab at Frost being a boy. I'm on my phone now so he pictures a bit small for me.

Checkout the link Star provided about essentials to a great cage. I see Frost has just one dowel perch and ideally he should have more perches and of different diameters, but reading the post will tell you all you need to know.

Thanks, Therm! There are actually three perches that came with the cage. We just hadn't put the third in when we took the pictures. However, like you said, they are all the same diameters. I just finished reading the post about the cages and have made a list of things to get at the pet store tonight, with variety of perches being top of the list! We have a lot to learn, but are so thankful to have found this site!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

While that isn't the best picture for determining gender, from what I can see - the cere looks to be a translucent pinkish-purple color which indicates cute little Frost is a male.

For gender and/or mutation help - Lighting and Angle DOES matter

If you are going to get another budgie from the same store in the next few days, then there will be no need to quarantine.
I would recommend getting another male. You can look over the Gender Guidance Threads below which will help you in determining the second budgie's gender:

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

When you upload pictures as thumbnail attachments directly from your computer, tablet or phone, the forum automatically defaults to landscape.

To upload full-sized pictures with the proper orientation, please use a photo-sharing service such as PhotoBucket and follow the steps in these instructions:

By the way, all photos entered in any of our forum contests must be a full-size photo and not a thumbnail attachment so it's good to know how to upload them!

If you have any questions after reading through everything, please be sure to ask!

Glad you decided to join us and looking forward to seeing you around the forums.

Thank you! Any idea what type or mutation he might be? Like I said, we are brand new, so I'm not even sure I'm using the right words! lol!

Frost looks like a sky blue normal to me but our mutations experts will be able to give you more accurate advice with regard to that than I.

Sounds excellent! There's a lot to learn about budgies. I hadn't owned a budgie for years when I got mine and I learnt so much from the forum and all the wonderful people here.
