Unhappy Traveling with budgies or better to leave them at home?

Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to see some family December 30th for a week or two. We have two budgies we purchased last Saturday. They're adjusting slowly, playing with each other and eating at a specific time. We were going to take our babies with us but I'm not sure if it is a good idea since they're not used to us yet and where we will be staying we will have to keep a heater on them the entire time since the house stays pretty cold in the winter time. At first we were going to take them with us and stay in a pet friendly hotel that night after 8 hours of driving and then the next day we will be driving four more hours and then they would be in a quiet room when we get to our destination. (We would be stopping to take breaks during the 8 hours)

Now we were thinking of just leaving them at home and getting a friend to feed them everyday and turn the lights on and off for them. Will they forget about us in a week or two? I'm worried it will completely mess them up in regards to us and they will bond closer together and not like us as much. Will we be able to pick up bonding right off when we get back? I'm not sure which option is best.

For your current situation, and in order to not add unnecessary stress for your budgies and yourself, it's best that they stay home.
That way, they will have more time to settle in and your friend will take care of their basic needs while you are gone.
With two budgies, it's only natural that they will bond more closely to each other and this is regardless if you are away on vacation or at home with them.

Once you come back you can work on slowly connecting with them and on establishing the foundations of trust. Bonding is a never ending process and while there may be some setbacks along the way, by setting up a routine and spending daily quality time with your budgies and training them by using positive reinforcement techniques, with time you will see progress.

For all the detailed information and tips on this subject, be sure to check the Taming and Bonding section of Talk Budgies.

I agree with aluz.
Since you've just had the budgies for less than a week, they will be much better off staying at home and becoming settled in their new environment at this time.
