Default First meeting.

Yesterday I introduced zuko and sapphire(I cant stick with a name) for out of cage time together and it went very well, almost to well as things don't normally fall into place so easily for me. I did not let all 4 birds out together as I thought maybe that would be overwhelming for sapphire and I wouldn't be able to watch how they interacted properly. Today I will let them all out and see what happens.I have noticed that all of a sudden Suki has decided that she wants to be my friend.it is as if the presence of another bird has changed her. I will be very interested to see how she reacts with sapphire when they are out, I will have to watch Suki like a hawk though as she can be quite temperamental. I'm still unsure of the gender of sapphire as she acts like a hen and is very quiet but her cere has a pinkish tinge to it, it's not really a tan colour. I will take more pictures of her when I let them out together.

I'm glad the first meeting went well.
Given the past issues, it really is best to keep a close eye on them all and no matter how well they might get along, if you end up by keeping Sapphire, it's simply best to house each pair separately. Personally, I would keep up with the out of cage meetings between Sapphire and Zuko in order for them to truly establish a bond and only later on to let the other two join the out of cage adventures.

If what you see for real is a uniform pinkish colour (no hint of white) on the cere then your latest arrival is a male. Male recessive pieds will keep the immature pinksh/purplish colour on their ceres throughout their lives.
The cere changes on females is the same, creamy white colour that may or may not have some faint blue colour on the edges when not in breeding condition and tan to dark brown when in breeding condition.

More pictures are always welcome, of course. Preferably decent quality ones taken in natural lighting.

Thank you.when sapphire joins them I will never house them altogether, it will always be 2 in one cage and 2 in another. Keeping zuko separate from Suki and Decca was the best thing I could of done although at the time it was the last thing I wanted to do. Everything settled down immediately and there was no more bickering and bullying. Zuko has the most laid back temperament and sapphire seems very laid back. I don't know her full personalty yet. When she was living at my partners she was very quiet almost like she had no personality , I think maybe he just wasn't interacting with her enough, although yesterday when he came to see how she was getting on she seemed pleased to see him.. just another question can a male act like a hen. My 2 boys are very very vocal this is what makes me believe sapphire is a hen.she's so quiet. I will try my best with the pictures , as you well know it's not my best quality.

The more time you allow your pairs to spend together, the stronger their bond will become.
Having them all out together is not essential. I would let them have a time out in their cages pairs. It will also make things easier when you want them to go back into the correct cages. When I houses my budgies in pairs, I would often only let one pair out at a time, rather than letting all of them out at the same time.

I'm glad to hear things went well for the first meeting and I'm looking forward to seeing pictures.

I agree with Therm that it would be best to let the budgies out only in pairs rather than all four together at one time.

Well I let zuko and sapphire have some cage time together today, it went very well, zuko started getting a little too excited at one point so I had to remove sapphire back into his/her cage. He was dancing around and sqwarking and kissing and flying and yes it was all beautiful and he was being lovely but I think it was a little too much for little sapphire ,he/she just seemed to freeze to the spot, zukos behaviour was just slightly overwhelming for my newbie. I think taking it slow is the best option here. He meant well but oh dear.... it's nice to see my previously bullied boy happy and very very noisy.

Taking things slow is definitely the best option.

I'm glad to hear overall things went well!

It might be a good idea to let Zuko come out by himself first. Let him work off some of his energy for a bit before letting Sapphire out with him for a bit, so she can get some exercise as well.
Hopefully, he will be a little less excited then and will have calmed down and his enthusiasm will just be for his budgie friend.
It is for the best that you keep taking things slowly, as you are, and getting Sapphire comfortable. You could also let Sapphire have some out of cage time on her own so she can get used to the room and go over to Zuko if she wants too.

It sounds like Zuko and Sapphire are both doing well.

Therm's suggestion is excellent!
I believe letting Zuko expend some of his pent-up energy will be very helpful.

I am happy to announce that zuko and Norma-n (had a name change again) are living in harmony. They groom each others faces and heads which is the cutest thing. I have to say for once in my life I've actually made the right decision. Keeping 2 pairs is much less drama , at night the cover goes over and there is no fighting over swings and perches. Zuko and sapphire share the swing. However in the other cage there seems to have been a falling out, Suki just likes to sit squealing at the other cage while Decca does his own thing.. still confused on gender with Norma-n I'm unsure if the cere is turning purple or tan. I guess time will tell. Can I just say I have one very messy cage and one clean one.. they must have seed, veg and poop fights in cage number 2 when I'm not around. 😊.
