I would like to get a bird from a decent breeder, but can't find a local one. How does this work?

Search online.
A very quick Google search bought up this list.

Flying Gems Aviary - Avian Breeder's in the USA

If you can't find any there, look to see if you have a local paper that advertises pets for sale and find a breeder that way.

Thanks, Therm. None of the ones that mention Budgies have any contact that works. One of them is for a decorator that mentions budgie artwork. I've been working at this for a while. All the pet stores get 40 birds at a time from out of state. :/

I had the same issue recently trying to find a good breeder in my area. I found a local bird rescue and had some luck that way. I even called local animal shelters to see if they ever got surrendered birds and what they did with them. It takes some digging but worth the effort to find a healthy bird friend!

I would suggest you contact the first link for an excellent breeder:

Budgie Parakeets

Another budgie breeder in Colorado:

Andersen Aviary

Shelley,

I was on wait-lists for every budgie I purchased from an ethical and reputable breeder.

I recognize your frustration.
However, it is more than worth it to wait for a good breeder to have budgies available than it is to rush into things and get a bird who was raised in a "birdie-mill".

Best wishes!

I empathize with you. I think it's hard to find quality budgie breeders most anywhere. Or many don't advertise too far and wide.

Be patient, and keep up your search. You might have to look out of state for a good breeder who ships, but then you're looking at around a couple hundred on top of the price of the bird.

I was fortunate to get Mink and Chip from a local bird store where the owner who bred them has a good reputation. Hopefully they have good genetics! They're still young. It was very difficult to find even out here in SoCal. If I didn't have that store, it would have taken me way longer to find a good budgie. I originally wanted some interestingly unusual mutations, but forget that.. it was too hard finding ANY budgies period (besides big box stores ).
Good luck .

Finding reputable budgie breeders can be hard. When we bought ours, it was basically a guess what it would look like as she only had pin feathers. When I went to the shop, she initially told me that all her budgies were already sold. But as I was getting ready to leave she told me to wait while she checked the nest boxes. I ended up getting to pick from 3 chicks.
