Hi, i have a hand fed budgie for 8 months and i got a 2 months old also hand fed budgie 7 days ago, but when i place them in the same cage my old budgie is pretty scared of her.
Is it safe to leave them in the same cage?
They were in separate cages for 7 days so far.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

You need to have the new budgie in quarantine at this time.

please be sure to observe quarantine for the new budgie.

Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room where your current bird(s) are housed for a period of 30-45 days.
Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.

Distinction between an Avian Vet and a Vet that "Will See Birds"
When you are ready to introduce your two budgies after the 45 day quarantine period, please be sure to introduce them in neutral territory. Sometimes having two or three supervised meetings prior to moving them into one cage is advisable. Before introducing a budgie into another budgie's cage, the cage should be completely rearranged (perches, toys, food and water dishes) in order to help prevent any potential territorial issues.

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

Hi Lina and to the forums!

It's great to have you on the forums FaeryBee has given great advice; you must separate them immediately and place them in quarantine from each other. Rearranging the cage totally as mentioned is important so that they are on equal terms.

Also, be sure to read through the forums, including the Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to stay up to date on the very best of budgie care, and if you have any questions, be sure to ask as we'd love to help

I look forward to meeting your budgies soon!

Cheers!

Thanks for the replies.
My old budgie is Lina and the new one doesn't has a name yet.
They are in separate cages ,but do they have to be in separate rooms? Is it necessary because the new budgie will have to be alone in that room for the most of the day, it's kinda sad

For the health and well-being of the budgies, you need to follow the quarantine practices as advised previously.

Many budgie illnesses are air-borne.
If you have the budgies in cages in the same room, then you are defeating the purpose of quarantine.
You will need to make a schedule to spend time with the budgie in quarantine.
Play music or the TV for it when you ae not in the same room.

FaeryBee is correct, it's important to keep them separate for the quarantine period. They will do just fine as long as you spend some time with each of them every day and leave on the TV, radio, or other music on for them when you're not in the room

You can't undo the seven days they were kept in the same room.

What is important is that you take the necessary steps now to follow quarantine as recommended.

Additionally, I recommend you read the stickies and Budgie Articles to begin learning the best practices to ensure you give your budgies the proper care for their optimal health and well-being.

Best wishes!
