Default Zazu says hello

Hi all,

I'm new to looking after a budgie, having graduated from keeping fish for many years. Here is Zazu, my 12-week old boy (so I'm told!)

Zazu Beak Grinding - YouTube
We'd both like to say a big 'hello' to everyone here; before buying Zazu I did a great deal of reading on the forum. So many of you have such beautiful budgies!

I've done plenty of reading, but I'm hoping the experienced members here can help me with a couple of things. Firstly, he does a lot of this beak grinding when I'm talking to him. Is this because he's relaxed, or is there a problem with his beak that he's trying to fix?

The other thing is I've noticed he's always had a sort of different coloured patch on his cere (sort of in the middle between the nostrils) which you can hopefully see in the video. Is this something to worry about?

Thanks everyone, both me and Zazu are grateful for any advice!

Joe

Welcome to the forums and the ever exciting world of budgie ownership!
It's great that you have been finding the information on Talk Budgies helpful and it will certainly continue to be as you become increasingly more familiar with the species.

Budgies will grind their beaks when they are perfectly happy and content, this is more usually associated when they are relaxed and getting ready to nap or when about to go to sleep for the night. The fact that Zazu beak grinds when you are close to him is a great sign.

Zazu is indeed a young male, from the video it seems that patch you are referring to is damaged skin from the cere from a possible attack before you got him. A close-up photo of the cere could shed more light on it. Also regarding his age, from the video I'd say he is close to reaching 5 months old. The colour on his cere is already quite deep.

Best of luck with your new little friend!
