Default Cage revamp

Hi all.

Im preparing my cage for when my baby comes home.

This is the cage Ive brought (hope that gives an indication of size).

I have just ordered a short wooden perch. (Useful Bird Perch Parrot Stand Rack Wood TOY Perches Durable Classic Natural | eBay)

Ive also brought a bird gym (Ive spotted them in a few peoples posts).

What do I do about changing the perches from plastic to wooden? I dont have much opportunity to get sticks/branches.

Ive also got the bells/mirrors and a ladder in there at the moment.

More suggestions welcome.

I hope the ebay link is allowed.

I couldn't see the cage picture, it may be my tablet that's not allowing it! I don't know what kind of interaction you plan on having with your budgie? Myself, I have my budgie outside of her cage just as long as I'm home which is a lot....therefore I don't keep mirrors in her cage because I want her more interested in me, not her reflection. I know having perches of different widths is good for their feet....I ordered safe natural wood ones from Amazon....I'm looking to add a grapevine perch as well. I have a lot of toys for the cage and outside of the cage, I don't keep them all out....I rotate them so my budgie doesn't get bored with the same old toys. Good luck with your soon to be new addition!

You want to look for a variety of width perches. Some perches come with variety in just one perch like a grapevine perch or a manzanita branch perch. That perch you linked is okay but if you go with dowel perches I would select different width dowel perches so your bird is not constantly putting pressure on the same part of his feet. IMO nothing is wrong with dowel perches or even plastic perches as long as there is plenty of perch variety for your bird.

You can order a good variety of perches on-line.

I do not recommend using plastic perches or the dowel rod perches.
There are lots of other options.

These are some of my birds' favorities:

Grapevine

Multi-branch

Comfy-Clam Calcium/Mineral

Banana-split calcium/mineral

Pedi-Perch

The minimum size cage recommended for one budgie is 18"x18"x18"

If possible, I'd recommend returning that cage and looking for something like this:
30"x18"x18"

Budgies fly laterally and the cage linked below is a good size for one bird.

You can use the cage you have as a travel cage/carrier so it isn't a wasted expense but your bird needs a larger cage to call home.

I think that works out, if my math is correct, to about 25" high closed, 18" wide, 14" deep. I think that's still too small for main housing. A great travel or vet cage for sure, but for your new baby's main residence, I would try and look for something close to the size at least that FaeryBee has offered. These budgies love to fly when they're in their cages, and they need some room to do so. The cage that she suggested is great. This is the cage I first upgraded to, and it housed my 2 boys for a while.

Hope this helps!!!
