Default Painting bird cage

I am getting a second hand cage from a friend ( never used for birds, she doesn't have any in the house, and I will thoroughly clean it)

I really don't like the color though and would like to refinish it before I get a bird. Does anyone know safe paints? Are rustoleum or krylon safe?

Hi!

Water based paints are safe for use.
Please take a look at Post #2 by Kate C in the thread below for additional information:

Thank you. Its winter so I can't really put the cage outside to " uv sterilize" it, but I know the person who has it so I am less worried.

Please just make sure you paint it in an open airy place and let it dry for at least a couple of weeks before reassembling it for use.

Powder coat is also a good option IF you can find someone to do it. The air-out time is a little less, and it's in my opinion a tougher and safer coating.

Its already powder coated I just want to change the color.

If i get this bird it will be at the beginning of January so that would only be about a week to let the cage cure. So I guess I either need to suck it up and leave it the color it is, or find a temporary cage.

That is correct because if the cage is painted it definitely needs to cure for more than just a week for the health and well-being of your budgie.

I was more thinking out loud. Its very possible I will get the cage now and just put off spraying it until spring.

I agree, I think waiting is a good idea

Also, how big is the cage? Do you know the bar spacing? Bars should be spaced to no more than 1/2 of an inch, and the minimum size for one budgie is 18 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches.

I'm just curious, since you mention it was never used for birds, and that might be a concern, if the previous owner didn't know.

I owned this cage years ago for my rats.

Its a wonderful cage. 1/2 inch bar spacing. 36"x24"x48" useable space. Plus a 1 ft stand.

Actually the bird I may be getting is not a parakeet. But this is still a great place to ask questions. The bird is a similar size. I just don't want to say much until I find out if I am getting her.
