Default Grate at the bottom of the cage?

I've never seen this before but our new cage has a removable grate at the bottom, I certainly don't remember any of my grandads cages having them . I'm assuming it's to stop birds walking around in their own poop but it seems rather uncomfortable if our budgie turns out to like the bottom of her cage, the bars seem very wide apart. I've taken it out and put paper at the bottom, I don't care if I have to change the paper every day it really doesn't bother me.

I think it's become fairly common place for cages to have grates at the bottom nowadays. At least all of the ones I've seen have them. The cage I bought unfortunately wound up having one that can't be removed without destroying the cage or making it easier for the birds to escape. Our female, Hope, seems to like the bottom of the cage more than our other budgie, Hamilton. At first she had a bit of trouble with the grate, but she learned quickly. I do like that the grate keeps them away from feces and fallen food, though I still clean the bottom everyday even with the grate. It also doesn't seem to bother the budgies, who spend more time on their perches anyway. I've seen a million different opinions on grates really, from people saying that not having them isn't an option, to just the opposite. It seems to be a bit of a "ask ten birdkeepers and you'll get 11 different answers" thing.

A lot of people who have grates on the bottom will put paper on top of the grate.

I also have a removable grate, I had one in the last cage I had, too, but the poop would get stuck to it and cleaning the cage took twice as long as I had to take the entire bottom of the cage off and then scrub the grate in addition to changing the paper. Mallorn's new cage came with a grate but I didn't bother to put it in, in my opinion it's a lot easier to just pull the tray out and replace the paper daily instead of going through that whole process.

I have heard that putting paper over the grate works too, but unless the grate slides out with the tray I'm not sure it would be any less work than putting it under the grate.

The one I had with the grate didn't even have a tray so the whole things was a bit of a nightmare. Neither of my new cages have grates.

I put paper on top of my grates for the same reasons StarlingWings mentioned. The grate is terribly hard to clean, especially if it isnt removable. I just change the paper and wipe things down. Nothing ever gets caked on so its nice. Plus poop isnt what makes them sick, its moisture combined with poop and or food etc. It is the moisture that really breeds bacteria.

I put clean newspaper on the removable grates in the Prevue Hendryx F040 cages each morning and evening.
At that time, the birds get a small ration of seed which is scattered across the clean paper.
They love running around "foraging" for it.

The clean paper on top of the grate is easier on the bird's feet, keeps the grate cleaner and gives the birds fun foraging opportunities every day.

After reading some of these posts, I think I may have to start putting paper on my grate too.

I hated my grates...I have 5 cages and cut my cleaning time down by 1 - 1 1/2 hours by taking the grates out!
