Default Cage catastrophe and a bit of advice please

As some of you will know from my intro thread, Jake came to us in a teeny tiny cage. As soon as we got him I ordered a suitable cage which was supposed to be delivered on Thursday.

Technically it was delivered...but... and it's a big but. The back of the cage was missing! So it's now Saturday and Jake is still in the piddly little cage. I've phoned the company and they've told me the 'spares department' will send the back out, and I should have it with my in a few days and that they will either phone or e-mail me to confirm. Well 2 days later no phone call, no email, so I'm assuming the part hasn't even been sent out yet and the few days it'll take to get here will be from when it's sent not from when I called.

I've read reviews of the company and get the feeling I'm going to have hastle with this/them!

So my question is this, do I leave Jake in his teeny tiny cage while I wait god knows how long for the replacement back? Or do I try and get them to come collect the cage and get a refund for it and source one (probably with next day delivery from amazon prime) instead?

Will he be alright in the small cage, or is moving him to a bigger one ASAP a priority?

I would leave him in his small cage until he can have a better complete cage.
If it were me id get a cage from amazon and get a refund from the other place.

I would leave him in his cage, too. He will be ok in a smaller cage for a little while. You said he is new? He might even prefer the smaller cage until he gets more comfortable and then move him into a larger more suitable cage. That's what I did with my first budgie, Lasso.
I also agree with returning the cage to the other company and going with Amazon. I love Amazon. I could be an Amazon spokeswoman. They are awesome when something goes wrong and I don't ship from anyone else if I have the choice.
Keep us posted! And enjoy your new budgie!

As the other posters have advised, I would suggest you order from Amazon today.
You can then deal with returning the incomplete cage to the company and getting your refund.

Phoned the company and they said 'ooh we'll have to contact the supplier direct for the replacement back' so they hadn't even done it yet! I asked them to get the cage collected instead and I'd have a refund.

So now I've ordered this instead https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Jen, that cage looks lovely, and is obviously great compared to his tiny cage. It's always worth remembering that budgies don't fly up and down and so width is always preferential to height when selecting a cage. But this is still a lovely cage for your budgie and he'll be very happy in it I'm sure.

BTW, as you're a fellow UK member, Pets at Home do a lot more bird products online than they do instore, so they're good to look at.
ZooPlus is great for cages, cheap perches and bits and pieces.
If you have The Range near you, you can buy natural perches much cheaper in there than Pets at Home (pets at home do lovely java wood perches though).
And The Natural Bird Company make amazing perches toys and things for your little Jake too.

I know... I knew this and it was one of the reasons why I chose the first cage, because it was nice and wide. But for some reason I got myself in a flap (pardon the pun) and that went out the window because the only space there is for the cage is on a shelf in a nook in the livingroom and so width is limited to 70cm.

I can cancel the order, it's not saying dispatched yet. I'll have a look for a wider one. Is it being wider so important that it would be better it be wider but smaller overall?

I was going to grab this one initially, but the reviews completely put me off, because they say it's quite flimsy https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberta-Riv...s=bird+cage+70

Jen -

Please do NOT buy the Riviera
79.5 x 42 x 15 cm 15 cm wide is only about 6 inches wide.

Give me a few minutes and I'll see what I can find that would be a good cage for you.

It's a misprint... Further down it says it's:-
Height 800 mm

Width 700 mm

Depth 400 mm

Bar Spacing 10 mm

which someone confirms in the reviews

Still wouldn't get it though I don't think because the reviews are horrendous!

Jen, what is your budget for a cage?

I got the ferplast piano 6 cage from Zooplus for 79.99. It's a beautiful large cage.

If you want something on more of a budget, then there the Finca pequeno. It's half the height but still enough. The cages are not incredibly sturdy but they also don't collapse and the birds won't get out. It's a bargain is 20!

And if you want extra height on a budget cage, this is a real steal! I haven't bought one of these but I'm planning to get one as a replacement for one of my Finca pequeno which I did some alterations on. Finca Melodia is a great size for 35
