Default Repurposed furniture as giant bird cage?

So I saw some fantastic pictures of people's large furniture like china cabinets etc that they repurposed into huge bird cages. If you google this you will see them.

But I was wondering, anyone done this? Any great resources on this? I'd be a bit worried about old paint on these pieces though and birds gnawing at the wood. but would be really neat if done in the right way.

Thanks

I've seen quite a few of these DIY bird cages on YouTube that are furniture adaptations, though they tend to be built more for finches/canaries. Softbill birds tend not to chew at the wood and therefore the wood type, treatment and paint/varnish issues are less significant than for budgies.
A lot of cabinet type furniture isn't really deep enough and it can be difficult to clean in the wooden joints. Also, with (usually) solid back, sides, base and roof, they can be quite dark, so would need lighting or be placed in a well lit area.

I did consider doing this in the past for my canary but decided against it due to the above reasons.
If you can find a way to do it safely though, they can look very attractive and it's really nice to have something unique!

Yeah I agree. You'd need to take sides off. I saw this one on this site and loved the way they did it

I have done this twice. Once with an old corner TV cabinet, and once with an old china cabinet.

While they look nice, and I absolutely loved them, they slowly started to get on my nerves. After a year or so, I was really fed up and ended up selling them, and using that money to buy brand new Prevu F050 cages instead.

The cabinets are hard to keep clean. Really hard! And the birds eventually started to chew the wood on the sides and the top, and around the doors.

With that being said, you'll likely love them at first like I did, but eventually the novelty of it will wear off. (But I hope it doesn't for you!)

That's just my personal experience.
