Default Where does one obtain a flight cage with horizontal bars?

Hi Everyone,

So my wife and I wandered into our local pet store the other day looking to buy a fish, but instead sort of fell in love with the budgies. So we went home, did a bunch of research, and now have a question that we cannot adequately find an answer to.

We want two budgies, and based on the general consensus across the web, know roughly how big the cage needs to be. The problem, however, is that just about every single flight cage large enough to house two budgies has vertical bars, and just about every single budgie-related resource I've found states that they should have horizontal bars for climbing.

I have only found a single cage (Hagen Vision Bird Cage L01) that has horizontal bars, but it just barely scrapes by on the minimum recommended dimensions (as recommended by a sticky on this site - other resources suggest it is way too small).

So basically, does anyone know where to find a large budgie cage with horizontal bars?

Hi and welcome!

While horizontal bars would be very beneficial for a budgie with mobility issues, I would say that just having horizontal bars shouldn't be a deal breaker with a cage.
My flight cage also has vertical bars. They tend to have a few horizontal bars in these cages for stability and budgies manage to get around just fine with these.

Most budgies tend to hop or fly around the cage anyway. And you can always get some ladders to help them as well.

I've been looking for horizontal bars myself and it's not easy! The Vision cages are the only ones I can find, although I did see a pic somewhere of The Perfect cage: horizontal bars all around, but it was a British post on a British site so I looked no further. It appeared to be an older cage.

I wonder why you can't find them??

I agree with Therm totally.

Horizontal bars are certainly not necessary for the majority of budgies.
I would only be concerned about bar placement if I had a severely disabled bird.

Budgies (including those with clipped wings - which I do not recommend) can easily climb the vertical bars in cages using their beaks and legs.
Additionally, optimally they should be hopping, flying around their cage anyway!

This is the cage we just got it's very large and wide so there is lots of room for placing different perches all over and lots of ceiling space to hang toys. I hope this helps good luck he hasn't done any climbing yet soooo ...

Thank you everyone for your responses. We have now placed a nice large cage on order (albeit one with vertical bars), which should arrive in about two weeks.

What cage did you end up ordering for the two budgies you plan to get?

I have several Prevue Hendryx F040 cages and two Prevue Hendryx F050 cages.

The cage you purchased is great for one budgie and meets the minimum size recommended for no more than two budgies.

We ordered this A&E birdcage.

The actual cage dimensions are 32"W x 21"D x 35.25"H.
