Default Current cage setup - advice please?

So this is Kowhai's current setup, and I just feel it's sorely lacking in something. I've ordered some bird kebobs, and Blingy was nice enough to point me to some websites with good toys, but I don't know what would would be better to focus on with 'perfecting' Kowhai's cage. Toys or fixing any issues (that I hope if you guys see you'll point out so I can fix it).

So any advice? Anything that I should take out/add too? Kowhai currently just prefers to sit in the branch (pictured) and get happily chirp (or glare at me) till I let him out again, lol. I don't see him play with toys or anything much when he's in the cage...

Thanks everyone in advance!

I think your gorgeous boy has quite a lovely set up there. He's a lucky boy who is obviously extremely loved. Does he have any toys for shredding, like those bird kabobs? I recently got my 2 one and they love it. They also love anything they can make noise with, like toys with bells. One they love right now has spoons hanging from it as well as leather strips with beads. Peanut pulls on the leather strips to make the spoons clang together. He thinks it's wonderful. Other than that, the only other thing I can think of is a trapeze mat. They love that and it's great for rubbing on when moulting.

Also, do you hide bits of millet in those hanging balls from time to time? They really enjoy working to get the millet out (well, they seem to enjoy it).

I'd remove the two wooden dowel perches.
If you want additional perches in the cage, then go for a java or grapevine perch instead.

Does he have at least one swing? Budgies love swings.
How about stainless steel bells - I don't see any in the cage and most birds love bells.

Do you have a cuttlebone, mineral block and manu clay rose in the cage?

I'd also consider replacing the plastic dishes with stainless steel ones which are less likely to harbor bacterial and are easy to clean/disinfect with white vinegar.

Shredding toys and bird kabobs made from yucca are good choices - I'm glad to hear Blingy pointed you to some links.

Also, take a look at the information in the links below:

Thank you! I've ordered the kabobs and they should be here soon! I think I've seen a similar spoon toy, would you be able to send me a picture? And yes, I try to hide millet in the balls, he loves it! I'm also planning on ordering the trapeze tomorrow! :>

I'll take out the perches, I've been meaning too, just need to order the new ones. That'll be done tomorrow I hope! He has a swing, but I am going to order him another as he loves it! He does have the cuttlebone and a mineral block hiding in there too.

Thank you!!!

Kowhai is a very lucky little budgie. As you have access to gum trees, you can make your own natural perches if you like. Just make sure you have access to branches that haven't been sprayed and clean any branches you plan to use thoroughly.

I look forward to hearing if Kowhai likes his new toys.

I ordered the bird Kebobs like Blingy (and FaeryBee) suggested and Kowhai loves them! I had a toy I had bought before researching toy safety that had ropes hanging from it, and with the bird kebob I noticed Kowhai kept chewing on the rope holding the kebobs more than the kebobs - so I took the rope toy apart and put the kebob pieces where the rope use to be and am chuffed it came out so well! My first 'homemade toy (if you can call it that, lol)

I removed the dowel perches as FaeryBee recommended, and replaced them with Eucalyptus branches. I ordered a grapevine perch as well that should be here soon! I also replaced the plastic dishes with stainless steel bowls (only two right now as the pet store only had two in stock )

I have a Flying Trapeze toy also on the way (had to order from Australia) and a few other toys so I can switch the setup around to keep Kowhai entertained.

Thanks so much everyone for your advice!

What a great space for your gorgeous little man. I'm so glad he loves his new toys (have fun sweeping up bits of the kebab toy after he shreds it and flings it all over the place, lol.) I'm always on the lookout for new toys and could easily spend a fortune if I let myself get carried away. I recently saw an activity ladder on an American site (Petco or Petsmart I think) that I'd love to get, but of course, we can't get it here. Be sure to let us know what Kowhai thinks of his trapeze when it arrives.
