Default Asper in Soil. Alternatives?

Hi all! I'm new here but I've been taking care of budgies for a while. This is my current setup for my 2 talking budgies, Basil and Lyssandra

It's 5ft x 2ft x 3ft / 150cm x 60cm x 91cm (L x B x H)

As you can see, there are some plants around the cage, but they're toxic, so I've to remove them before my fids' daily out-of-cage time. It's a hassle, so I was thinking of just having spider plants but IN the cage, instead of around it.

However, I've read about Asper in soil, and I was wondering if there are any alternatives. Has anyone tried coco fibre mats, hydroponics, or something else? I'd like my fids to be able to destroy the plants if they want to, and stay safe.

If there aren't alternatives, I think I'll stick to hanging them outside of the cage, but with the leaves poking in.

Hi there

Basil and Lyssandra sure have a nice cage and set up .

Here is a list of toxic plants and other things to keep away from budgies: https://www.talkbudgies.com/your-bud...materials.html

According to this avian veterinarian’s link, spider plants are safe. They provide a list of other bird safe plants too. If you have questions about it, I’d call them. https://www.avianandexotic.com/care-...afe-for-birds/

Although you’re not new to budgies, we have some useful current information in our Stickies and Articles, so be sure to look over these areas. If you have questions that you can’t find, just ask.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of Basil and Lyssandra.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

RavensGryf has provided great information with the list she linked for you.
I particularly like the information in this link as well: Houseplants - Safe and Toxic

I hang mine outside of the cage. I currently have Coral bells on both sides of the cage. While Coral Bells are completely safe I have read that they can be a nightmare to maintain as houseplants by some sources and easy by others. I will probably replace them with something with showy flowers that tends to trail this spring that is bird safe as more becomes available in my area. I have read that some people cover the soil with things like river rocks or aquarian rocks to big for your birds to swallow. Others use coconut fiber to cover the soil. I don't have any experience with this personally though. I would use an organic soilless potting mix and check the ingredients for safety even still. Your budgies are so lucky by the way!
