Heater for budgie cage

Itís heading into Winter here in Australia and itís getting really cold. I have 3 budgies, in 2 large cages and Iím wondering if I should add a heater of some kind to each cage to use at night. Iíve seen some people use electric pet heating pads that they drape over the outside of one corner of the cage (keeping the cord out of reach of course), allowing the birds to move close to the heater if they want to, or further away if they get too hot. My birds all tend to sleep in specific spots though and I wonder if they wonít take advantage of the heater because of this. Iíve also seen heated perches and wonder if this might be an option.

My cages are both covered at night, except for the back, which is up against a wall. Will the night covers (old bed sheets) be enough or should I invest in heating (& if yes, what kind of heating)?

Generally, using a fleece blanket as a cage cover is sufficient.

How cold does it get inside your house at night?

I use a plain cotton sheet to cover the cage as I was worried the birds would chew on fleece. It can get very cold here in winter, down to freezing at times (outside), and only a few degrees C inside. Currently Iím waking up to inside temps of about 10-13 degrees C but itís going to get much colder when winter really hits.

I use fleece as a cage cover and have not had a problem with the birds chewing it. Are your birds outside?

No, my birds live inside. I only take them outside (in cages) on nice sunny days to get some sun (full supervision). I never take them out when itís cold.

I use towels in good condition. Depending on the weather, I put enough towels on thrie cae to comfort them. A good portable heater will work ok. Just be sure the space heaters are in good condition for safety.

I was thinking more of a bird or pet heating pad that sits on part of the top part of the cage. I wouldnít feel comfortable about running a room heater while I sleep.

Since heat rises if you put something on top of the cage it may not be too useful for the birds, as they will be below the heat. If you can somehow secure a heating pad to the side of the cage it may be more beneficial. I have a heater like the one in this link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FT1XZW/ref=dp_cerb_2
if I have a sick bird that needs to be kept really warm I use it, there is nothing exposed on it so it will not start a fire if something comes in contact with it and I have left it on all night with no problems, but I understand the reluctance to do so. The only bad thing is that it does use a lot of electricity. Should you decide to use something like this just make sure there is no teflon in it that would get heated up.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I bought, and just installed a Snuggle Up heater for each of the two cages. Itís been getting colder and colder each night here and we havenít even got to our coldest time of year yet. Now Iíll feel a lot better, knowing they have something to keep them warm, if they want it. (I put Peanut and JoJos sideways so thereíd be more room for the two of them to sit in front of it). https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c86741ed39.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c62a167aae.jpg

I'm glad you were able to find something you are comfortable with and will be interested to know if your budgies make use of the heater in the colder weather.

Best wishes!
