Hi, I'm Julie from Southern California
. I'm glad to have found this forum. I've been reading the information on Lindsey's great website for some time now.
I'm not new to birds, but fairly new to budgies. I have 5 birds - 3 parrots, and 2 budgies. My Red Bellied parrot I've had for over 20 years now.
It's funny how crazy I am about budgies considering I got into them by chance. I never considered keeping budgies until I went the pet store one day on my lunch break... I went to the bird section, and there I saw the most beautiful mutation (to me anyway)... It was my boy Twigs in my avatar. I knew I HAD TO have him. Recessive pied, yellow and blue (instead of green) and he was like eye candy to me. I told my husband right away, I need to get this budgie lol! It was right near Christmas after all (2012). We went back to the store that night, and I got Twigs, and hubby picked out a white/mauve recessive pied who looked like a little snowy owl. We had DNA testing and they were both males. Pix only lived about a year and a half. Two avian vets determined he had genetic issues which contributed to his organ failure and early death.
Long story short, Twigs was desperate for a friend after Pix died. The parrots who are 114g to 240g (not very big, but huge even to a mean little budgie) had accepted him for a while, but recently they have become a danger to Twigs, so I made the decision of getting him a friend. Mink is an English budgie, and still in quarantine so they haven't met yet. By what it says on Lindsey's website, I'm guessing female. DNA results should be back soon. I got them a new double flight cage and tons of new toys. They'll be spoiled little things for sure
