Unhappy Budgie Moulting Help!

Hi ! This is my first ever post on here so please bare with me if I end up doing anything wrong !

Budgie Moulting Help!-tiki1.jpg

Budgie Moulting Help!-tiki2.jpg

These are pictures of Tiki.

My name is Steph and I currently have 2 budgies. One is called Tiki, he is a year old and we have had him from a baby. My other is called Moon, he is new to our family and is only a few months old. They are both boys.
Tiki is an extremely friendly budgie. He is in a large cage, lots of toys and a good diet. He is frequently let out of his cage to fly around my home, and he will always land on us and talk and listen intently to what we are saying.
Over the past couple of months or so I've been contemplating getting Tiki a friend. I've heard a lot about male budgies being very amorous towards one another so I did my research into how to introduce a second male budgie and I decided to bit the bullet and get another.

Currently, they are both in separate cages whilst they are getting used to each other. The cages are close to one another so Moon and Tiki can hear and see eachother. When Tiki has been let out over the past week he has landed on Moons cage and they have been chirping away to one another and crawling the sides of the cage to get closer.

The only issue I have: is that Moon is very small. He is older than when we got Tiki, because his cere is blue and Tikis still wasn't showing a colour, so I can't understand why he is so small? Also, he cant fly! After 3 days of him getting his bearings in his cage in the lounge, I let him out to fly (on his own) and he just fell straight to the floor and proceeded to hop around. He tried to fly, but can only get about 1 foot off the ground. Is this normal? When we got Tiki he was flying around my living room straight away and always has done since. Moon has no flight feathers, and since we've had him (1 week tomorrow) his tail feather has dropped out also. I am completely baffled as to why this is happening! He looks happy, he's bobbing around his cage, eating, drinking, his poops are normal, but he looks very scruffy.

My second issue, is that when I went to let Tiki out tonight for a fly, he has lost all of him flight feathers in 1 wing, so now can't fly neither. 4 flight feathers from his wing were at the bottom of his cage so it's happened whilst he was in his cage. This has never happened in the year we have had him and I just think it's a bit of a coincidence since Moons feathers are falling out too? Tiki isn't going through a moult because he has no pin feathers and there aren't many of his body feathers at the bottom of the cage, plus he isn't being grumpy!
I am beginning to get worried.

My plan is to not let Tiki out of his cage until his feather have grown back because I don't want him hurting himself. Similarly to Moon, I won't let him back out of his cage until he is looking like he has more feathers.

Is there any advice anyone can give me? I am getting really worried about them both especially Tiki as I have a really strong connection to him now!

Thank you,
Steph.

Hi Steph and to Talk Budgies!

Were Moon's wings clipped before you brought him home?
If so, that would be one reason he can't fly.
If not, he may not yet have developed the strength in his wing muscles to be able to keep himself airborne.

Tiki is going through a molt right now if that is a current picture and that would be why he lost his flight feathers. He'll probably lose the ones on his other wing as well but will grow new ones so it's nothing to be concerned about.

Some budgies are smaller than others -- just like some people are smaller and some larger. Have you had Moon examined by an Avian Vet to ensure there are no health issues?

Welcome to the forums!

To promote good feather growth and help your budgies cope better when moulting, you can supplement their diet with egg food. You can make some by hard boiling an egg, mashing it all up and sprinkle a few loose seed on it (like flax seed) and some finely chopped veggies. Or you can buy ready-made egg food from a specialized pet store.
