Gato and her brother were the first violet budgies I had ever seen. Gato was a beautiful spangle, which made her even more special. On Mother's Day, Gato had an accident while I was trying to catch another budgie, resulting in her breaking her leg. I nursed her through until yesterday, when she suddenly went downhill quite quickly. I made the heart-wrenching call to have her humanely euthanised, and had arranged for a friend to come and take her have it done.
This morning, when I went out to check on her, she was lying on the floor of her cage, unresponsive. I carefully lifted her out, and my worst fears were confimed. Dear Gato had died during the night, with her brother watching over her.
Thank you so much Kate, and Jill!
I don't know whether to introduce her brother back into the aviary yet (his foot is healing nicely, and hasn't bled since Monday), or buy him a new girlriend (so that I have an even 3 males and 3 females ratio). I don't know how you tell whether a bird is grieving for a lost friend. I'll be keeping an eye on him over the next day or two, just to make sure he's doing okay.
Oh no. I'm so very sorry about Gato. She was so young... taken much too soon. Poor baby.
Budgies can grieve the loss of their flockmates. Given that her brother is still very young too, he will probably not grieve for too long, especially if in the company of other budgies. When he is healed and can join the aviary, maybe then you can see how he does and decide whether or not to get him a girlfriend?
Again I am so sorry for your loss of this precious little one. She was such a little darling.
I am so sorry for your loss of Gato. So young to to pass on. He was a Beautiful Little Precious darling so sad to go so young. Sing a sweet song Gato you are now free. We will never forget your sweet little face. You are truly a beautiful little budgie. To young to leave us. It heart breaks me when our little baby budgies leave just to young.
