Default Lightning passed away

So sad in our house today. This morning my daughter awoke to find her bird on the bottom of the cage. He was doing so good too! We already had him doing great with training sessions! He was getting comfortable out of the cage, stepping up and being on shoulders. He was getting less frightened of hands too. He was a spirited bird and showed a fun and awesome personality.
He had a rough start when we got him only a week ago. The lady broke several blood feathers and while he did survive and seemed okay, perhaps he got an infection. He might have been sick and we didn't know. With parakeets its hard to tell.
Its a sad day and my heart hurts for my daughter...

I am so sorry to hear this... I can't imagine what you must be feeling only after one week of getting him, it's truly heartbreaking. I hope you and your daughter will be be able to heal from this loss and maybe open your hearts to another little fellow. But I wouldn't get another from that same shop that had people who handle him so badly.
Rest in peace, little Lightning.

Thanks guys. He did have a rough start and we are not going back that pet store at all! Lightning was a sweet bird and if nothing else we gave him a great week and at least a chance. The original petstore was just going to put him back where he would have bled to death in the cage.
He might have gotten an infection from the broken blood feathers or was sick to begin with who knows. I don't think we had anything in the house that caused it or did anything. We are trying not to beat ourselves up over the why it happened as we wouldn't know.
We did go and print some of the pictures up we had and my daughter got a small photo album. That helped. She also wanted to go and look at the birds at our local Petsmart. They had some very pretty ones and she is thinking she might want to get a new friend. Kids are resilient and a new friend might help her. I did tell her her new friend will most likely take longer to tame. lightning was nearly hand trained after only a week. He got comfortable with us very quickly and even though she is 8, she was extremely patient and very good with her bird. I think she'll be great again.
Anyway thanks again. It's hard even though it's only been a week. We were getting pretty attached to that little guy! Now at least he can fly free and high right?

Oh no, I'm very sorry to hear this . I'm glad Lightning had her last week with a caring family, and that she knew love in her short life.

RIP Lightning, fly high and free.

Oh what sad and unexpected news! I'm so sorry
to hear beautiful Lightning has gone to The Bridge.
She was a lucky bird to have known such love, and
that's the best gift a budgie can know.

I think it would be wonderful if she chose a new friend.
There are so many little birds waiting to be loved, and a
loving home is too special to stand empty for long. Besides,
nothing distracts us from our grief like a new little life that
needs our care.

to both of you on this sad day. Please stay here on TB
with us.

My daughter decided to go and just look at the birds at Petsmart. She ended up finding one that she wanted so we went ahead and got her a new friend. This one is a baby. The stripes on the head go all the way to the cere so we are thinking 2 to 3 months tops. Can't tell if this one will be a boy or girl but she doesn't mind either way.
Lightning was a boy for sure but we'll see about this new one. She had decided on a boy the first time mainly because we heard they are more prone to talking and training easier. She picked out a beautiful bird and i know she'll have the same gentleness and patience with this one as well. I just hope her new friend help eases the pain faster. I know it's crazy to become so attached after one week but it was such a traumatic start and lightning was the kind of bird you fall in love with quickly. He had a funny attitude and was a complete clown. Now I understand why people love parakeets as much as they do!

RIP Lightning. We will miss you!

It's a gloomy and rainy day here in Texas (although we do need the rain!) but my daughter is thinking about naming the bird Stormy.
Here's a quick picture of her new friend.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of little Lightning.

Fly high and free sweet Lightning; rest peacefully now wee boy.

Your new bird (Stormy) is quite lovely. I hope having the new budgie will help ease your daughter's pain at losing Lightning.
