Default Goodbye Sargeant and Rhonda

Hello everyone, it has been some time since I have been on here, what with moving home and not having internet connected yet, after 3 months! But I have a chance now to fill you in on some of the goings on with my little gang, and sadly, the loss of Sarge and Ronnie was one of the main events.

I had been struggling to get the new place decorated in time to move in over that first week, and also caring for children and two recovering budgies. Ronnie seemed to be doing really well as most of you will remember, it was touch and go and we never thought she would make it, she was egg bound so long and looked so weak after her vet visit, like she was about to die any second, but she pulled through and started to recover and was acting almost her old self. Sarge had injuries on his body and had hemorrhaged badly from his wounds, he was overweight which had helped in a way as he had a few extra ml's of blood that helped him to survive I'm sure. He wore a little sock jacket to prevent him from picking his wounds as this has caused more worrying bleeds than the original! He wasn't making any fashion statements but the jacket was as comfy as I could make it, and seemed to be working well.

The night we brought the budgies over to the new place I had stayed in with the kids while my mother and other half picked up the cages. As soon as they got back to the new place I went to the door and my mother said 'you're going to lose that bird so prepare yourself, he will be gone very shortly' and she brought the little white cage in with Sarge and Suki in. Sarge was on the bottom very close to passing away and Suki was wide eyed in a new place worried about her mate. Earlier in the day Sarge had looked well, I still don't know what caused such a rapid decline, maybe the journey was just too much to the new place with him being so weak? I quickly took him out of the cage and felt how close to death he was, so I took his sock jacket off to make him more comfy and put him back in the cage with suki and covered it lightly so they could see each other but not be disturbed. Sarge then passed away within the minute. I was so upset I howled and bawled my eyes out. Suki had been cuddled up to Sarge as he was about to pass away and when I looked was still cuddled up to his body, and was pulling his feathers every now and then to try and get him to move, it tore me apart to watch but I knew she had to go through the process as much as me as well as comforting Sarge in his last moments, instead of always wondering why her mate had suddenly disappeared. Suki let us know when she understood and was ready to join the group again by sitting on her perch and calling to them. I put her back with them asap as I knew she needed the company of her flock during her grief. Within a few days Suki had paired up with Skylar who was being very attentive just as Sarge had been. After her own ill health and losing her mate I think Skylar really saved her. 3 months down the line they are still attached at the hip and make a wonderful pair, I'm sure Sarge would approve of Skylars efforts.

After Sarge died I had a good look at his body, for the first time I could see past all his fluff properly, and boy was he a fluffy fella! and I saw he was covered in barely raised patches that looked like tumours or lipomas, and it was these he had picked and made bleed, and from the look of them they were well supplied with blood. He was an old fella and overweight so he may have had many problems, but the fact that the vet didn't notice these patches really upset me for a while, even if at Sarges age there wasn't much that could be done, the damage was likely too great. I will always miss little Sargey pants, he was the sweetest little guy I had ever had the pleasure to meet!

Shortly after Sarge passed away we also lost Rhonda. Little Ronnie was practically back to normal from the outside, lively and interactive with the group, even flying well, her abdominal swelling was gone and you really wouldn't have known anything was ever wrong with her! She had finished her meds and was just getting on with it. Then one night we heard a terrible racket in the cage, as the budgies all bounced off the sides terrified of goodness only knows what. We rushed in and uncovered them, it took a long time for them to start moving again, all clinging to the sides of the cage paralyzed with fear, so we kept them uncovered with the light on and pottered about so they would start to relax, and eventually they did and they all seemed to be fine and calm again. The next morning we found Ronnie on the bottom of the cage having passed away in the night some time, it had only been around a week since we lost Sarge and I was in pieces at this point, wondering what could possibly go wrong next! But since then the other 8 have been fine, we've had no more health issues, and the other day (friday), 3 months or so after losing Sarge and Ronnie, I finally felt ready to go have a look at some budgies, and picked two out, although there were 4 I really liked! Then I had a message from my sister saying her mother would like to rehome a budgie, Bobit or Bob as he was called, so now we're upto 11 budgies! No one can ever replace Sarge and Ronnie, nor Violet the baby we lost last year, but Bob and the others are proving to be quite the little characters! and I hope the budgies we have lost would approve of them, I think they would

I'm so sorry for your recent losses. It's always heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet and it's true that no other budgie will ever replace them as they were one of a kind. I'm glad you were able to open your heart to a few more budgies and the flock is doing well now.
Rest in peace, Sarge and Ronnie. You will never be forgotten.

So sad... RIP Sarge and Ronnie Poor little guys, they'll never be forgotten. I'm sorry for your loss and hope you're doing OK. I also hope the new budgies are settling in as well, you should post some pictures By the way, you need to change your "number of budgies" from 10 to 11! We don't want Bob feeling forgotten ~ Amber

Oh hun, that is terrible news to hear, poor Ronnie and Sarge

Maybe Ronnie was still too weak after all the meds she was on to be able to handle a night fright properly, i know how you must have felt.. i lost Talos in a night fright myself.

Its a shame the vet missed those tumour type lumps.. i would have been on the phone to them and complaining but thats just me

RIP Sarge and Ronnie, you were very beautiful little birds and you will always be in our hearts, and won't ever be forgotten. Fly high and fly free sweethearts xxx

I changed my number of budgies Amber, poor Bob! How could I forget!

I know Kat , the vet seemed really good with them as well, and I know they were hard to see, he had a big one near his neck though, and the vet had a good look so not sure how he missed them, it was odd how they were so flat, looked like thick scaly skin, slightly raised in patches, but he was really fluffy, I think they might have been lipomas because he was overweight and old, probably fed nothing but seed all his life, although he enjoyed his veggies while he was with me, and supplied Suki with veggies! Since he passed away Suki has been eating veggies by herself, so I think before she was just lazy getting them fed to her all day by Sarge Skylar is very attentive but has brought her out of herself a bit more, he's a very bold bird, always looks after the newcomers bless him, he was such a tiny scared little thing when I got him, but when Nemo came along he looked after him, and he's been looking after Bob too, such a good little man is my Skylar he will even come close to us or sit on us sometimes, and if I go to do something in the cage and veggies are out he will still eat the veggies while out on top of the cage with my head right next to him. When Bob came Skylar sat on his cage amongst the3 kids and 3 adults who were in the room, he didn't care, just wanted to see who the new guy was, and he tried to encourage him out of his cage like he would a chick from the nest, I bet he would be a wonderful father, tempting lol.

aww bless, Ares was a bit like that with baby Dink. When i got him (19th june) he was a very sick little baby, he had a RI and mucus in his lungs and nose, had a nasty cough which sounded like a bark, sneezing nasty tail bob etc, was scarey.. the vet said he'd had it long before i got him tho so he didn't get it while he was here which was a relief to hear.

Ares has been looking after him like he was his own son, its so adorable, i got a beautiful photo of them together just a couple of weeks ago i'll have to show you it some time.

Freki didn't like Dink at all and kept picking on him, Ares sorted that out tho and now Freki leaves Dink alone hehe.

If I remember rightly Ares is quite a big chap I bet once he put Freki in his place Freki took the hint! Freki is only a little fella bless him, but such a cutie I saw a picture of Frekis face close up, a more recent one, he has changed so much since that big moult! What a big boy he is now! With his adult plumage

Poor little Dink, sounds like he really went through it! I hope he is nice and healthy now and stays that way, and horray for Ares looking out for him I had a feeling Ares would be a good'un. Had no idea Skylar would turn out like he has though! He was such a tiny little thing when I bought him, eyes wide with fear, flitting about terrified, I thought he would be like Misty, totally unsociable with us to the point of hyperventilating if we came near, but no, he came right out of his shell, and today is the first day he has been looking out for Bob, and Bob is already following him about and eating veggies! Skylar soon got baby Nemo on the veggies too, and Nemo is a very confident bird for having Skylar guide him, I couldn't have wished for more from Skylar, he's like the daddy of the group even though he is so young I have been very blessed with my birds, even if some sweet hearts aren't with us anymore, they have left their mark on us in unforgettable ways, oh man I miss them
