I now have only 2 budgies in my flock after the recent passing of my bonded pair Sweetpea and Cobalt. ): Sweetpea was fairly old according to the person I purchased her from a few years ago, so I'm not surprised she passed away. But what does surprise me is her mate Cobalt's death. He was only about 2 years old and they had just bonded in the last few weeks. Sweetpea was about 4 or 5. They didn't mate, but they cuddled and fed each other. Then one day, Sweetpea started having bloody poops and she died the next day before I could call a vet (she was not egg bound as far as I can tell). Then Cobalt stopped eating and I found him dead of the floor of the cage just a moment ago (he did not have bloody poops). I'm concerned that my other two budgies are in danger... Does anyone know is this sounds contagious to you? I don't have a vet anywhere near me that I can ask....
Anyway, rest in peace my little babies. I'll miss you!
Oh my gosh I'm so sorry for your loss. I would take your other two for a checkup just to be sure. were they all in the same cage eating the same food? Did Cobalt eat the same food as her? Did he some how eat any of her poop? Or touch the blood? You mentioned above they fed each other which sounds like a very good way for something not air born to be passed.
I'm so sorry at least you still have two cutie pies do your best to keep them healthy.
No, they are in separate cages (right next to each other) and I thoroughly scrubbed all the cages, dishes, and toys after Sweetpea died. But it's possible he ate some of the poop before I cleaned it... :/ I wish I could take Blossom and Flint (my other babies) for a checkup, but the only avian vet anywhere near me is two hours away and our car just died... I'm happy I still have Blossom and Flint, but it breaks my heart losing Cobalt so soon after Sweetpea! D:
He probably just ate some of the poop and it just took him down a different way so no bloody poop. Did you see any signs in colbat or sweatpea ( besides the bloody poop) before they passed? if you see any of the same sighs or just sickness signs I would try to start your car and either make the trip or at least go to a vet.
I'm so sorry for your recent losses... I know how heartbreaking it is to part with them. If you're worried the remaining budgies might have caught something, keep a close watch on them. A check up at the vet will also give you some peace of mind.
Rest in peace, Sweetpea and Cobalt. You were much loved and will be missed.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
Oh Gosh I am so very sorry for the loss of your dear Sweet Pea and Cobalt.. You must be Heart Broken... I no i would if i lost two Budgies.. If the vet is two hours away can't you ring them to see if they would make a house call and come and see you and your Budgies... Again i am so very sorry...
Rest in Peace little ones.... Sweet Pea and Cobalt Fly Free...

Thanks for your comments everyone! Today, I took the cage that they died in completely out of my bird room and I'm going to throw everything in it away. Flint and Blossom seem to be okay for now... Before Sweetpea and Cobalt passed away they were very tired looking and they stopped eating/drinking. But my other birds seem okay. I hope that no one has the same thing happen to them!
