Default Rescued bird died :(

I live in the UK.

On Tuesday a white budgie with a blue chest flew into my front door unexpectedly. We attempted to look for an owner and someone said the bird was theirs or so they thought, they visited on the Tuesday evening and said it wasnt their bird.

We attempted to ring the RSPCA and we couldn't get through to them even though we tried atleast 20 times. The budgie seemed fine however we could not afford a cage as my father is disabled and my mother is his registered carer so we have no large income and had no money left for this week. However we found a small hamster cage which I put a perch in for the budgie to sit on etc and we gave him water and bird seed for the 2-3 days we had him. Yesterday and the day before he would sit in his cage in my room chirping and being joyful and when I let him out to fly he'd swoop around my room a couple of times and even began just landing on my shoulders and my arms and sitting on the top of my laptop screen when I was sat down. I called him Blue and we bonded very fast. He had dirt down his wing but as I've never owned a budgie before I assumed this would be because he had been outside and flew in and not a sign of illness. Today I went out and left him alone in my room in his cage for the first time he had been alone for an extended period - he seemed okay when I left, just a little tired. Then earlier on tonight while I was at my girlfriends house my mum rang me to tell me she thought he was dying and they'd tried everything and he was just sat staring into the corner of his age and had fecal matter around his bottom - the vents i think is the correct term from the research i did when i was trying to learn how to look after him properly. anyway an hour or so later she contacted me again to tell me he had died

I've never really had a pet before and this is the first time I've ever looked after anything. I changed its food/water everyday and I cleaned his poop and things out every day and I have no idea why the one day I leave him he dies. I feel like it could be my fault in some way. I tried my best with what I had to help him but I can't stop crying and feeling bad. I miss him even though we were only together for like 3 days. Just how he'd fly over to me and sit on my shoulder or watch me play on my laptop and sit on my wrist, and how he'd chirp to me as I walked in my room.

This is him and me in the pictures

Hello and welcome to TB, although it was such a short time you shared with him I am sure you will agree you got complete and enjoyable feelings from him being part of your life, He could of had any number of things go wrong before he came to your door. Many things can affect a budgies health. Please don't blame yourself for this unfortunate happening in fact with time you might be able to open your heart to another budgie and all because of the lovely time you shared. Please come back any time I glad you shared your story with us .

I do agree, he was brilliant. Chirped at me all the time and if I made chirping sounds at him he'd talk back to me. He'd nibble playfully on my finger if I put it near his cage. How he landed on me when I let him out, even though he'd known me just a day. I'm really glad I got to spend even this short amount of time with him as he brought me much joy. At the moment I just seem heartbroken. Thank you for your kind words

This is true. In the future now I do hope to have another one. I'd never been interested much in pets before but when a budgie turns up in my door I thought it was my duty to look after it and make sure it was okay. I guess I can feel a little better as I know I tried my hardest and I fed it and gave it water and did everything I could, with the little available resources I had. I guess me trying to home it was better than just leaving it to fend for itself. RIP Blue you'll never be forgotten.

Sorry your new little friend's stay was so brief...it seems he was able to expose you to the joy of budgie ownership, something you will not forget...

I'm so sorry for your loss.. Even though you had him for only a few days it is clear Blue was a very sweet and special budgie.
Rest in peace, Blue. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I'm sorry for your loss, Blue was clearly very tame and someones pet who'd escaped. I'm so glad you found him and helped him out during his last days. Its amazing how quickly these little guys capture our hearts. I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing pictures of a new budgie in your life soon

RIP sweet Blue, fly high and free

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Still feeling heartbroken now that I've woken up the first morning without him, he's not there for me to take his towel off his cage and have an early chirping conversation with him
