Aww, driving into town today, a Rainbow Lorikeet darted straight into the bottom of our car created a very loud thud. I didn't even see it, my husband (who was driving, who felt horrible) saw the bird so we immediately stopped and turned around. It's body was twitching on the road. So I picked her up to take it off the road, her eyes half shut and her neck broken. Her beak racing up and down, slowly became less and then stopped and her eyes stopped blinking...no heartbeat. I felt like I had owned her, sobbing in the rain holding her dear little body.
It got me thinking about all the bird roadkill and the families the birds leave behind.
I was sad all day, thinking about the bird now makes me cry. Poor little thing.
Rainbow Lorikeets are such beautiful native birds in Australia and having a bird myself touched me watching this bird passed on.
yeah it was horrible, specially knowing that we hit the bird. They are just so fast! I can't believe how emotional I got. But I'm glad is was a quick death.
Thanks for your support guys, felt like I had lost my own.
What a SAD story and situation. I've had birds hit my windshield before and it made me cry too. I can't imagine hitting something like a Rainbow Lorikeet. After just holding my baby Budgie and having her die in my hands this past week, I can fully understand your emotions. It's a terrible feeling isn't it?
I have never seen a Rainbow Lorikeet before so thanks for sharing the photos. They really are beautiful. I wish we had them flying around here.
