Default RIP, little darlings - Sini and Bombolina

Dear all,

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to let you know that this past Sunday (September 8, 2013) I lost my baby budgie Sini (male) in an accident. Poor baby drowned. I left him safe and sound and a bit later found his lifeless little body... I am always extremely careful when I let them out of their cage, but this time one oversight on my part led to tragedy. I will never forgive myself, even though people are trying to convince me that no matter how careful one is, sometimes one can make a mistake.

Bombolina (female) passed away on June 28, 2013 (before I became a member here), due to an illness. She was chronically ill when I got her from the pet store. I just couldn't leave her there like that. After several visits to the vet and a course of antibiotics, she initially showed improvement that gave me hope but suddenly deteriorated and ultimately left me. I did all I could. She wanted to be close to me to the very end and kept looking for contact with me (she even slept in my hair - went there during the night while I was sleeping). She died in my hands the following day at the office.

I couldn't bring myself to post sooner. It is hard even now. I also have to change the number of my budgies in my profile from 3 to 2... My budgies mean the world to me, all of them, but I had a very strong bond with Sini and Bombolina. We were together 24 hours a day (I would bring them to the office). And now it is just me.

Sini and Bombolina are the budgies in my profile picture.

Good luck to you all with your birdies!

I'm so sorry for your recent losses... Unfortunately accidents do happen, it must have been quite a shock to find your little fellow like that. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose a beloved pet, let alone two in such a short amount of time. You have my deepest sympathies.
Rest in peace, Sini and Bombolina. You were much loved and will be missed.

Hello don't be too hard on yourself, these little guys are full of mischief and they will investigate anything unfortunately they don't come pre wired for dangerous situations. We also can't stop them from being the way they are. It doesn't matter how thorough one can be it take s just one split second sometimes , it doesn't mean you loved him any less and he will know how much you cared for him and his partner. Maybe one day in the future you will find it in your heart to take on another budgie, Try to smile and think lovingly of your little guys as they will be looking down on you with love in return . xo Fly high little ones forever in mummy's heart.

Aluz, Cathy,

Thank you so much for your sympathy and understanding. It means a lot.

Yes, it was an incredible shock finding him in the bucket, his little body floating there... I will never forget that. I took him out. His beautiful dark eyes were closed, his body limp, his feathers plastered on his fragile little body. I forgot to put the bucket away after taking a shower (I had put it safely under the sink where it can't harm them before that, but had to take it out sometime later and completely forgot to put it away after using it). One mistake is all it took.

I had left my three birdies out in the bathroom (it is easier to clean after them there, plus they have ruined my curtains in my bedroom, so I thought I'd let them out in the bathroom - there's plenty of flying space for them there).

Sini's wings were clipped when I got him at the pet store. I got him together with Bombolina and Bel (she is ok, thankfully, my naughty little girl). Initially, I only wanted to get Bombolina as she was so little (way smaller than the other budgies there), clearly emaciated and ill, but I decided (I might be wrong though) that Bombolina and Sini were brother and sister and I didn't want to separate her from him, so I got both. Bel was sitting there as well, pretty as can be, and I thought "well, three budgies, two budgies, what difference does it make? I am getting Bel as well!". This is how I ended up leaving the store with three birdies instead of just one. I already had a yellow girl (Chichi) at home whom I had been looking for a partner for.

Sini's flight feathers were just starting to come back in (two of them had grown), but he couldn't fly properly yet. He couldn't achieve lift. He fell in the bucket - either coming down from a high place (before leaving the bathroom, I put him on the mirror cabinet to play there with Chichi and Bel, who can fly), or he tried to fly from the top of his cage (I had placed it on the floor so that he could climb on something after landing on the floor) which was pretty much level with the bucket. However it happened, the important thing is it happened. I went in to check on them at one point and looked for three birdies. Chichi and Bel were sitting on one of the towel bars. Sini was missing. My heart sank when my eyes landed on the bucket. I looked in, and well, you know what I saw...

If his wings hadn't been clipped, he wouldn't have died this way. A flighted bird does't fall in water. Flying is what helps them avoid many of the hazards they may encounter at home (and in the wild).

Thank you so much for your kindness, to me and to my birdies! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Rest in Peace, sweet little Sini and Bombolina. Keep their cute faces and happy songs close to your heart, and they will be with you forever. They are together again, talking about the good times they had with you. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry you lost your little sweeties and to make it even harder is how you lost them both so tragically. I know it's easy to say don't be hard on yourself but you are only human and we all do things we might do differently given our time again. You did not deliberately cause harm to Sini by any means.

You obviously loved them both very very much and they will always be special to you.

I really feel for you.

all people make mistakes.. we can learn from them and then be more careful.. it's so hard though, losing a beloved friend. I call them friends and not pets.. May they rest in peace and fly to rainbow bridge..

Guilt multiplies grief no end, and you can never heal like that. To Finally Really receive powerful forgiveness, it is essential to cry out to The Creator of life and death, and ask for mercy for an unintentional hurt you have caused. When you receive forgiveness from the One that actually came and died for our sins, it is the Only forgiveness that truly counts.
I pray that you will find peace over this

As I re-read this, I was dismayed to find it sounded so heartless, judgmental, and preachy.
That's not at All what is in my heart to convey - Please bear with me, while I pray for a better expression...

I was struck by your comment: "I will never forgive myself, even though people are trying to convince me that no matter how careful one is, sometimes one can make a mistake."
How True that Is - (And how tormenting...) It's the Guilt/Blame issue, compounding your already great grief - (How Could I have made such a terrible mistake)
It's also true that other people's compassionate response can help ease your burden for awhile; but - there comes a time at 4 in the morning, when you wake out of sleep to a chorus of "If Only If Only If Only; while that personal guilt just tears up your heart in the dark night of the soul.

I have Great compassion for you, and what has happened.
In my 61 years, I have inadvertently been responsible for injury or death to several beloved pets; and it's the most heart and gut wrenching thing Ever. I, too, was unable to deeply forgive Myself, Despite the kind support and forgiveness of my friends - I couldn't let go of the guilt.
Until I came to know The Lord - The Creator of Life. The one who made our own special personal budgies just for us.
He knows our heart, as nobody else can, and knows we would Never intentionally harm our darlings. He also knows we are not perfect, and are capable of making mistakes - sometimes fatal ones we cannot take back. He has so much compassion for us that he actually died to take away our sin - So - He Certainly forgives our unintentional moments of weakness.

He has been called "The Comforter" for a good reason - When The Creator of the Universe forgives you, you are forgiven, indeed; If you believe it.

I Do pray you find peace - Your 2 little darlings wouldn't want you to be tormented by their death - God doesn't, either - just to remember their special, wonderful, lovable selves with thanksgiving.

So very sorry you lost them
