I woke up this morning to the Yellow/ Grey female laying dead on the floor of the cage (she's the one i got with the pair of yellow face violets)
she seemed fine yesterday, she ate, drank, everything normally, the only thing i did notice is instead of climbing down the cage to get to the bottom or flying down she would Jump down
I don't know what is going on - but I can't afford to loose any more birds,, nor can I afford to take her to a vet and have them charge me $130.00 dollars to send the bird off to a collage for a autopsy, when I called the college they only charge $75.00 to do it I'd take it to the college my self but its over 3 hrs away from me
Does any one know of any colleges that do the autopsy for free? I know i read it on a forum but I can't remember what forum (other then a bird forum and i'm only a member of 3 well 2 now)
There has to be a college some where that does it for free, just to get the experience
none of my birds look or act sick, NOT this one that just died and NOT candy
I don't know if they're breaking bones when they're jumping (or getting knocked down) to the floor, or what
the floor is made of plastic, and I've got it lined with newspaper
I am stressed out past my limit, between trying to get this house in order to move in to it, and the move it self and christmas, now my birds are dieing on me I can't handle no more
So sorry to see your post in Memory. I said oh no not another one. RIP Budgie. Sounds like is have a very busy schedule. You don't need things like this happening. Were Candy and this one in the same cage together?
That is sad and so frustrating. I wish I knew what to say.
Cutie Pie, Olive, Budgie, Baby Boy, Star, Pepper, Ariel, Oscar, Charlie, Little One, Chiclet.
Cutie Pie, Olive, Ariel, Little One and Chiclet are children of Budgie and Oscar.
Budgie and Star left us in 2009. Pepper and Oscar left us this year, 2010. 2018 and all are gone. Ariel and Cutie Pie died this Feb and March. Both over 11 years old.
A good day is a day all your birds are happy and healthy.
yes they were, they all came home at the same time, this one, the yellow face violet Pair (those 3 came from the same place), then another Violet Female, and Sunny and Candy came from the same place, all were purchased in the same day, rode the hour and a half trip together, So I quartined them together - since they were already together that whole time
But neither Candy nor this one showed any signs of bieng sick and niether does any of the other ones , The Violet pair are in a differnt cage (same room) they've got a nest box with their cage, the candy and this new one didnt need a nest box
I have a feeling its from hitting the floor of the cage, thats why I lowered every thing after candy died,
The floor of the cage is actually pretty hard plastic
Maybe I should put a old blanket or some old towels down on the floor then layer it with newspaper to make it a bit softer????
I know birds hide thier illness - but Surely they would of shown Some sort of signs
and before I forget thank's for the kindness
p.s. if anything is spelled horriably wrong u can thank Nibbles and Baby my kids' tiels today they're facinated with my keyboard and my finger tips lol
Well, no, actually, they may not have shown any signs of illness. They do hide their illnesses and you have only had them for a couple days. If they came from varying pet stores, one could of had a diease and passed it to the others. Birds are not as fragile as we think, so it would be unlikely for two birds to break bones and die within about two days.
If Candy was off balance etc. like you described, sometimes sick birds act like that.
But then I am no expert.
I do not know about any colleges that do it for free. I hope you find one.
I'm so sorry ATV... I can only sugest you come up with the cash and have a necropsy done as it sounds like you have something being spread amongst your birds. You've added a lot of new birds lately, so it sounds like something has slipped thru quarantine. Without a necropsy, you're really never going to know the cause and why this is happening.
Where do you get your seeds? do you buy them in bulk? I used to get them in bulk, but a few years back I had 3 birds die. It turned out there was mold spores on the seed and this is what killed them. They could have come in contact with the mold months before and I wouldnt have know too. My vet said a tiny bit of mold can contaminate a huge quantity of seeds, and thats probably why i never saw it.
Needless to say, i've never bought in bulk again! (theres only one supplier near me also!)
I bought the food at a bird fair back in Sept, it was from Zupreem Dealer, I got my Quakers food there also(same person same brand just the cockatiel size for him) Him and Sky, and tweety have been eating that food for the longest out of all the birds
I saw Candy Fall once the night before she died, But she landed on her feet, and was scurring around the bottom of the cage right afterwards getting the millet that was dropped, she still climbed around that night, I went to bed about 30 mins. later got home fed them, watered them and then left when I got home , I was home about 20 mins and sitting on my bed going through my mail and I saw her fall out of the corner of my eye She seemed fine , she was walking around the bottom of the cage just fine, I came into the living room to get on the computer, and let my daughter use the one in my bedroom for her games , and she brought candy out to me, She thought she was fine and was just going to be one of our friendliest birds
then when I put her in a seperate cage - and I lowered the perches she wouldn't even get up on them didn't even try , so I sat her on a towel on the cage floor so i could get her a dish of food and water and when she tried to move thats when i noticed she only moved in cirlces, I noticed she did try to perch on my finger and hand when I was holding her, But wouldnt even try with the perches, but when I sat her on my desk and she went to walk and it was more and she slid instead(almost looked like she was on ice and some one pushed her across it to make her go really really fast) I just assumed it was because my desk is slippery and she couldn't stand on it , none of my budgies like to stand on my desk- but none ever did that they just would hurry back up on my hand or a finger
But I found a vet thats a little over a hour away, They said the cost is 45 (thats going to be easier to come up with then 130.00) but I got to call back on monday to see if i need a apoitment, the lady that does that wasn't in today
All i gotta say is when it rains on me it pours nothing has gone right all month, and I see dec. won't start off no better
Sometimes sick birds act like that. Maybe she got worse and began to show it.
I hope all goes well at the vets'.
Aww don't say that, think of all the lovely birdies you've got.
Thanks, I am thinking of all my other birds, I thought I was doing everything right quratined them, EVERYONE has to wash thier hands after bieng in the room with them even if they didn't touch the bird(s)
I got to say out of any of my birds dieing the budgies were NOT the one's i thought we're going to start dying on me - - I really thought I'd be loosing the tiels I got from that nasty rescue I was very surprised when I woke up the next day and they were still all alive - i felt like that for the first few weeks, because i thought for sure I saved them too late, and NONE of my budgies have been near them!! the room they're in has the door closed 24/7 we go in close the door feed them water them , sit and talk with them for a few mins, Leave the room close the door Go straight into the bathroom(which is right beside the room they're in) and wash our hands with antibactiral soap and hot water)
