I can't believe I'm posting here. We brought Mike, our budgie, home only 1 1/2 years ago. My 3rd son finger trained him, and 'broke the ice' with him.
He'd been sleepy alot lately and bored looking. We just bought him a mate 2 weeks ago. Last week he began to have troubles with his vent feathers ... little poop cluster stuck there. We thought it was because the new perch was thicker and he rested his little tummy on it.
Alas, not so I guess. I woke to find him on the floor of his cage and the new baby bird almost looked like he was guarding him all night.
I have to say that having a budgie has taught my boys such compassion and kindness, it's beautiful to see. Today, I couldn't believe it, the kindness they showed too in caring for him and burying him in the yard. Choosing the special place... it's just amazing to see.
We have our new baby still to care for. We may just get him a friend to keep him company, as they were so sweet together.
RIP lil' buddy!
Keep an eye on the budgie that you still have. If Mike had some kind of infection, it could have spread to the other budgie. Do you have an avian vet nearby?
Also, if you are planning to purchase another budgie for your existing one, do quarantine. Read up on it here on the forum. That will prevent the spread of any (in case there is any) illness from one budgie to another.
Sorry to go off the track here, just want you to be aware...
