Hi all, I recently purchased a budgie from a local pet store with my girlfriend. We were super excited as we have never owned a bird before. The lady told us it was almost 6 months old and still a baby. We bought a nice big cage for it and named it fruit loop because of the nice colours it had. So it was shy at first so we let it be in the cage to get used to the surroundings. We changed the water daily , made sure there was 2 water dishes and always kept food in the cage for it to eat, while refilling it when necessary. We always had kept the cage clean and refilled the paper towel at the bottom. Our house is not cold or our kitchen is not close to the bird cage. Fruit loop was happy but never chirped too much. It was tough to get it to come out of the cage at times but when he did it was happy. It would occasionally puff up a little but but nothing too serious. He would make a clicking sound sometimes with his beak but we thought nothing of it. This brings me to the day before his death. He was acting a lot more chirpy and hyper than usual and was moving around the cage wanting to get out which was kind of odd so we opened the cage door and he instantly stepped on the edge waiting for us to grab him, which he'd never done before. When we put him back in the cage he was kind of hyper still but was hiding underneath a piece of paper towel on the ground of the cage, we thought he was playing around being cute. But he usually sits on his water container at the top of the cage. The next morning the same thing happened and he was acting kind of hyper, we just thought he was starting to open up to us and love us more. My girlfriend was playing with him a lot and he was very friendly. We left for the day at 9 in the morning and came back home at 8 at night. When we walked in the door I joked and said I bet you he is playing under the paper towel, and she went to check on him and started crying a lot and said she thinks he was dead and he was lying on his side with his eyes wide open looking like his neck was straight it was so sad and we only had him for 1 and a half months could you please help me through this and give me ideas of what could have happened? Thank you!
there are many things that could have happened starting from the place you bought him at of the fact that he could have gotten sick or been sick there's endless things that coud have happened im so sorry for you
I rather doubt that this happened but just in case, how often did you add seed? Did you blow off the husks daily? Some people see a bowl of husks and think it is still full of seeds. Other than that, the only way to find out more definitely what happened would be to get a necropsy done.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Cutie Pie, Olive, Ariel, Little One and Chiclet are children of Budgie and Oscar.
Budgie and Star left us in 2009. Pepper and Oscar left us this year, 2010. 2018 and all are gone. Ariel and Cutie Pie died this Feb and March. Both over 11 years old.
A good day is a day all your birds are happy and healthy.
I am so very sorry for your loss.... I don't no how to help you... Did you give your budgie fresh seed every day as they have husks that get in the seed and you have to blow out the husks... I give my budgie fresh seed every day and fresh water... Maybe he was sick in the pet store... Did you take him to the vet and to see if they can find out why he died.... I am so very sorry for what happened....
Sing a little Song dear little one you are now free of Pain... Your Mum loved you little one..
Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Somwhere over the rainbow
They say that dreams come true
Some day over the rainbow
I'll sit awhile with you
Gonna wrap my arms around you
And whisper in your ear
Gonna tell you all the love I feel
How my heart holds you so dear
Gonna lovingly gaze at you
Let my heart skip as you smile
Than tenderly I'll kiss you
Hold you close for just awhile
Yes, somwhere over the rainbow
They say that dreams come true
But I knew my dream came true
That day I met you
I'm so sorry for your loss... It's possible when you got him he was already sick and actually hiding his illness till he could no longer hide.
I know your heart is broken over this loss, but maybe with time you will open your heart to another little fellow.
And if you do decide to get a new budgie, I suggest you first read all the stickies here at the forums for all information you need to know on budgie care.
You should also wash and disinfect the cage and all accessories, including the perches, toys, food and water containers, etc.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
He could have been sick from the beginning, but also, did you cook at all with non stick cookware? I lost 4 parakeets, due to a non stick oven liner, I wasn't sure what was going on until it dawned on me. Birds have very sensitive respiratory systems.
Reading the stickys on this forum will be a big help.
Sorry for your loss......
I am so sorry for your loss he sounded like a lovely budgie who was starting to bond with you nicely. There are many possibilities as to the cause of his death, as the others have said. Budgies are affected by many different things pain fumes , cooking fumes, perfumes, what were you feeding him? seeds, pellets, please don't blame yourselves in time You may find it in your heart to obtain another budgie you can never replace the ones you lose but loving another helps! perhaps reading up and trying to get as much knowledge before hand will be of benefit too Hugs to you both.
Thanks a lot everyone! We changed the food regularly and it didn't seem to be the cause of his death. He was breathing kind of quickly when we had got him but just though he was scared of his new environment which we had read was normal for new budgies in a new home. Maybe he was just sick ever since we got the little guy and also we use non stick everything and do not cook near the cage at all. I think it was bad luck but it is very very hard not to blame ourselves, and that is the worst part, the feeling of thinking we have done something wrong and harmed the poor guy
Like has been said, there are so many things that could have caused it. Do not blame yourselves. I think the more you read on here, the better you will feel about it not being your fault. I dont want to bash pet stores because a lot of people get wonderful pets from them, but it is certainly a much bigger possibility of getting a sick, or genetically inferior/unhealthy bird from them, than from a reputable breeder. I hope you find your way back into the wonderful world of bird ownership...
