Broccoli is on a distinguished road
Unhappy HELP! Blood everywhere - rat attack?!

Hi there,

My boyfriend owns a budgie, and she is such a gem. Her name is Broccoli. He is currently looking after my pet rats while I am home for the holidays. While he out of the house, Broccoli managed to somehow escape from her cage - we think through her food dish area, as she has done a couple times before. One of my rats sits on the top of her cage frequently but does not move from it usually. Anyway, he came home to find Broccoli bloody everywhere. She's got a few really good scratches under her beak, on her eye brow, and she's missing feathers on the back of her head.

He has rinsed her cuts, they are no longer bleeding and has her sitting under a light bulb. She can barely hold a perch. We think she may be on her death bed. What can we do to help save her?! An avian vet is not an option, as we do not have one in our neck of the woods, the closest is around 8 hours away.

HELP, we can't watch our baby die.

Keeping her warm and putting some betadine on the cuts to help clean them out is all I can think of....hopefully someone comes along here soon to give you more advice...mabye some pedialyte to give her some strength

Do your budgie first aid: check her as thoroughly as you can, making sure there are no unseen cuts (such as under the wings), keep warm, cover cage on three sides to provide safety and protection and keep her quiet and observe. Offer food and water close, and encourage drinking, maybe even water on a spinach leaf, and provide a soft landing mat in case perching becomes a problem (soft material in the bottom of the cage covered with fresh paper to observe droppings). Check out any droppings - they may be runny, but are all the normal bits there - greeny browny coiled tube poo, white cap of urates, ring of urine.

Don't be frightened of seeing a vet who isn't an avian, too. Any vet with small animal and/or exotics experience is better than none. Call the surgery first, ask about their experience and interests. One of the best vet visits I had was with a non-avian (she's best know as a fish and venomous snakes vet), who has birds herself and is genuinely interested in them. She was extremely competent with crop swabbing, microscope work etc.

With missing feathers on the back of the head and cuts under the beak, are you sure she didn't get her head caught somewhere? That's another possibility. If, say, she was trying to get at food in the rats cage, but the bar spacing is a little wider than a budgie cage, and she got her head in but panicked and couldn't get her head out.

Good luck - for all they are small, fragile bodies, they have tough little spirits and if you give them warmth (even a hot water bottle outside the cover above their high perch), quiet time and easy access to easily digestible food (millet) you give them the best chance of recovery.

I keep a bottle of Spark for such situations now, too - added to the water this provides energy in cases of stress.

Wishing you all the best.

You seriously need to take your baby to a vet - if the rat attacked her, then I dread to think of the bacteria from the teeth on her soft skin and flesh. She'll need antibiotics for sure.

As the others have said, you need to help her with shock, with electrolyte drink etc. Even cuddling her gently and maybe humming to her, or what ever it is that she likes - you need to give her a reason to fight the injuries. I call it "anchoring" them.

I wish her and you all the best.

I agree with Lynda You seriously need to take your baby to a vet ASPA this is serious and as Lynda said bacteria from the teeth on her soft skin and flesh. She'll need antibiotics for sure. I no the vets are a long way from you but 8 hour drive is worth it as it could help your budgie to get better. People have given you good advise here. I wish you all the best and hope your budgie gets better. Please give us an update on how your budgie is...

Unfortunately, Broccoli passed shortly after posting this message. We're very heartbroken.

We are unsure what caused the injury, and it was likely the rat. Although, it is strange that they even encountered each other. It is just a heartbreaking situation.

My boyfriend preformed all the budgie first aid we could. Gave her a heat pad, she ate millet and water surprisingly, and he cleaned her cage to avoid further infections. He was on his way to grab ointments and electrolytes when he knew she had given up was ready to pass on.

Please realize that Broccoli would not have made our drive under the stress and the -35oC weather in the condition she was in. We made the call to bring her comfort instead. She didn't make it much longer than an hour upon being discovered. Please keep Kevin in your thoughts as this is the first creature we've owned that brought him as much joy as it did. We had Broccoli for a very short period of time (since November) but these two were glued at the hip. This is a very difficult time for us.

ETA: I didn't think of that previously Wiki, but that is totally plausible or that she just got stop somewhere. I don't think she'd be looking for food in my rats cage though,as they eat jumbo squares (look like horse feed), and not seeds. I guess it doesn't matter how it happened, we feel as though we've let our baby down. She was 10 years old, but we just feel like we abandoned her.

Thank you. I'm not sure what to do. It is very rough, and there have been a lot of tears.

I am so sorry for your loss, I just read that thread..
Please be careful with other pets in home... I think they have to be in separate rooms at least when noone is home. Accidents may happen but most things depend on our caution.
You have my deepest condolences for Broccoli...

So very sorry about the loss of your dear little one. 10 years is a great innings, he must have taken very good care of her. It was an unfortunate accident, just one of those things which can happen when you have a Houdini bird. Hindsight is always 20-20 vision: the best you can do is learn from the experience and focus on the wonderful times you had with little Broccoli.

Give yourselves time to deal with the loss, perhaps in the future he'll be ready to let another little feathered one into his heart.
