I lost my little Zuni during the night of January 1. He was only 1 1/2 years old and his death was very sudden and unexpected. He had never shown any signs of illness, however, that evening, he was sitting on a shelf in the cage, huddled between a rope toy and his cage mate, Alfred (who I now know is a female!). They often sat together on this shelf at bedtime, but they were snuggled together closer than usual. I thought maybe they were chilly and covered their cage for the night, as usual. The next morning Zuni was on the bottom of the cage dead. There was no sign of any injury. This came a complete shock. Alfred seems fine, other than missing her friend.
Zuni was beautiful, but always seemed a bit smaller than the average budgie. The closest I'd ever been able to get to him was for him to hesitantly eat millet from my hand. Alfred, is a hand raised English and was tame until she started living with Zuni. Then she sort of followed his lead and would no longer let me hold her. With the loss of her cage mate, she now seems to want more attention from me again, which I am gladly giving her. I cleaned the cage thoroughly and fortunately Alfred is showing no signs of illness....but, then again, Zuni didn't either.
I'm so sorry for your loss...I know how hard it is to see them go so suddenly, budgies are great at hiding their illnesses and sometimes it's just too late for us to do something. You have my condolences.
The pain from losing Zuni may be hard to bare now, but time will heal the hole left in your heart and soon you will be able to remember fondly all the good times you had with him. I hope you and Alfred will feel better soon.
Rest in peace, little Zuni. You were much loved and will be missed.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
