Default Goodnight to my Maddy

Hi everyone, I really dont know where to start, I had to put down my budgie maddy yesterday and my heart is breaking!
He was my star, he talked, he sang, he was so friendly, a superb friend of almost 10 years.
My heart break is this, for the last few months his poo had been gathering around his bottom, sometimes it was only a little sometimes none at all, the local vet said he was okay as the colour was fine just to keep an eye on him.
Until late on monday night when I was doing his night time routine I noticed the poo was gathering, respectivley I cleaned him and went to put him back into his cage when he took flight landing behind the sofa, when I rescued him he seemed as though he had hurt him leg and could not perch or walk, upset I looked out a box and made him comfy and secure for the night, the next morning he was the same but chirppy as usual but the problem the same.
Trip to the vet immenint.
After the vet had checked him out she said that nothing was broke his legs were fine, we chatted about the poo again and she said to me the reason he was unbalanced was due to his digestive problem, maybe his kidneys something about toxings into his body, advised that antibiotics may work but prolonging the obvious, She said a few days boxed would not be a good idea as his bum would get wet and sore and he could get sores and he probs would not be able to perch again, my heart breaking I decided to put him to sleep thinking It must be the right thing to do...I held him until it was over...Since then, reading forums and stories I have started to think I have let him down, was it me, have I did wrong, would an bird specialist have been the better option rather than the local vet..I miss him dearly, he is away being cremated and his ashes will be returned on friday.
Can anyone relate to my story for some reason I am in search of some sort of answer....why did this happen one minuite he was ok, the next........

Thanks,
A heartbroken

Fiona

Sorry to hear of your loss, but to know that you kept him so long says you treated him well. 10 years is really good for a budgie! It will get better in time and one day you will be ready to love another bird.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. You did what you thought best for him and you were there with him in his final moments and that's what matters most.

I am so sorry Fiona. It is not your fault. He lived to a good age. You did your best. The bond you two had must have been strong after that much time. I know it hurts now. But give it time and you can love another budgie again. xxxxx

Yes the bond was sureal even more so as it was my late grandad that bred budgies and he was a baby when I picked him from a large group of new borns.
For some reason in my mind he helped keep the bond between me and my late grandad.
When he looked at me in the eye is was as if he knew.
Im going mad I think...
I cant beleive he is gone

Fiona~ I'm so sorry for your tremendous loss of your long time friend. From what I have read 10 years is a long life for a Budgie and speaks well of your love and care. Don't blame this on yourself...you were responsible and did all you could. I think maybe your little one simply had kidney failure due to old age.

I am so sorry that you had to go through that. Try not to second guess yourself, you did a great job with him all this time.
