Default It's been a hard week

We have a 100 year old eucalyptus tree that towers over our house. It's protected because it's so old so we're not even allowed to trim it without jumping through hoops. Our last request was denied so it happily drops messy gum nuts, branches and leaf litter all over our roof and yard. Last week I asked my husband to get up on the roof and pressure wash the litter off the corrugated plastic roof of the enclosed courtyard where my budgies live. My parents had borrowed our ladder so he climbed up the fence and washed it all down for me. The courtyard roof is safe to walk on as long as he steps on the support beams so he was walking along the edge cleaning off the gutter guards. Little did either of us know that one panel on the edge had a spot that didn't pop back into shape by itself, leaving a very small gap.

I came out a couple of days ago to find Aubrey and Gandalf gone

I am devastated

It's something that was easily fixed and preventable now that we know. But the damage is done and two of my beautiful girls are gone.

One of them sat up in a neighbors gum tree calling out to the flock, in fact I think one or both of them are still out there. The flock has been put off by the whole ordeal. They will go very quiet at times like they're listening and then one or two will flock call loudly. I put a cage out in the hopes they would come back for food but no luck. They are both excellent fliers and they know to avoid larger birds thanks to Kree being so grumpy.

I knew the risks when I put them in the courtyard, I knew it was a living experiment and that I couldn't account for all the variables beforehand. I thought giving them a life without closed cages or hot metal aviaries would be worth it in the long run, everyone I know with outdoor birds lost at least one during the recent heat wave but I didn't lose any and I didn't have to bring them inside because it doesn't heat up like a normal shed aviary would. But as practical as I try to be it doesn't change the fact that I get so darn attached to each and every bird like they are family and losing 2 of my oldest girls has left me a mess for days. It's taken me this long to even talk about it, I've been so upset.

Putting it here makes it official and hopefully I can start to move on.

Goodbye Gandalf and Aubrey, I'm sorry I couldn't keep you safe.

I'm so sorry your two beautiful budgie girls have flown away... It's still possible they are alive and maybe someone rescued them. I'm hoping for a miracle and that you are able to get your precious girls back unharmed.
And if you don't get them back, there is always the chance they are being taken care of by good people.

OH Allie, sometimes life is overwhelming and seems to do nothing but mock and throw bad things at us. You are one of the best bird mummy's I know please don't take it upon yourself to blame. It was a sad accident your birds are so happy and content. Don't give up hope I have had birds escape and come back days later once they heard the flock I am hoping and wishing for them to return .

I am so very sorry Allie.. Allie you are one of the best Mummy's there as you love your budgies so very much.. Please don't blame your self you are a wonderful budgie owner.

TINY FOOTPRINTS..
"These are my footprints,
so perfect and so small.
These tiny footprints
never touched the ground at all.
Not one tiny footprint,
for now I have wings.
These tiny footprints were meant
for other things.
You will hear my tiny footprints,
in the patter of the rain.
Gentle drops like angel's tears,
of joy and not from pain.
You will see my tiny footprints,
in each butterflies' lazy dance.
I'll let you know I'm with you,
if you just give me that chance.
You will see my tiny footprints,
in the rustle of the leaves.
I will whisper names into the wind,
and call each one that grieves.
Most of all, these tiny footprints
are found on Mommy and Daddy's hearts.
'Cause even though I'm gone now,
We'll never truly part."

I think it's very possible that they are still alive, for how much longer, I don't know. They are two crafty little girls that's for sure and probably impossible to catch unless they were injured. Neither are the slightest bit tame. I was hoping they'd come down and try to sleep with the flock at night or in the cage I put out, that way I could just nab them in the dark but I haven't seen them in our yard at all.

They are so very happy and I would do anything to keep them safe but unfortunately things go wrong. I've lost 6 birds this year, 3 to escaping and 3 to illness. I hope I can learn to do better. They got out last Friday, I saw one of them in the tree on Saturday afternoon and then nothing since. I would be very happy if they came back but I guess I'm not holding my breath.

In my experience, accidents are the most difficult thing to get over. When they are ill we can prepare ourselves. When it's an accident ... well, it's so sudden and shocking all we can do is wish to go back in time.

I lost one of my dogs in a horrific accident; one minute we were having a pleasant walk, the next minute he was dead. Hit by a train whilst chasing a rabbit. Six years later I am still struggling with it.

I lost our first budgie in a careless way, forgetting she was out and leaving a door open. Weeks later, in freezing weather, I still look around outside that door.

So sorry for your loss. I do hope they find their way home to you.

Allie, please don't give up hope yet.

We had the same thing happen to us one summer years ago. We did the same thing you are doing, putting a cage out with the flock in hopes of the bird returning. I think it was about 2 weeks before we caught her clinging to the side of the aviary one night.

Keep doing what your doing, and hope for the best.
