Every post I do on here seems to be in memory. You must all be getting a bad impression of the way I look after birds...
Tyres, my very first zebra finch, has been put to sleep, aged two years, ten months.
For quite a while, Tyres had a bad eye. It was swollen, and a funny milky coffee colour. I have no idea how it happened, but it didn't seem to bother him at all. Although I'm pretty sure he was blind on his right side, he was happy, hopping around, singing, eating and drinking. The only difference was that he found flying in a room difficult (I guess because he couldn't see), so I didn't let him out of his cage. I did take him to the vets, who bathed his eye and gave me antibiotics to put in his water. Although neither of these actions made him better, he didn't get worse.
Until last week.
Seemingly overnight, he started to huddle up and sleep a lot. He didn't sing, and his bad eye swelled so extremely it pushed his eyelid entirely out of shape. When I examined him, he would sit quietly in my hand, making no attempt to get away, which is highly unusual for a finch. He was eating, but he was miserable. I took the resident bully, Peanut Butter, out of the cage, because he kept shoving Tyres off of perches. This didn't help much. He was surviving, not living.
I took him back to the vets, and we agreed that the thing in his eye may be a tumour, and maybe it had grown right into his brain. I said my goodbyes to Tyres, and he was put to sleep.
I felt really bad for doing this, but really, what choice did I have? He wasn't enjoying life, and, for all I know, he could have been in a lot of pain. It was very obvious something was badly wrong. I had to consider what was best for Tyres, not me.
He was a great finch, always a friend to the less fortunate finches I owned (Twist and Weeble). He had a lovely piping song, and was a very handsome pied. I took a few pictures, I'll see if I can upload them or something.
For some reason, even the birds I buy healthy end up ill, through no fault of my own. I'm well known for adopting the strange birds no one else wants, but I do occasionally buy 'normal' ones. And then Tyres has his eye problem, Bandit has epilepsy, Pretty Fly and Ichigo-san both had strokes, and Dali just dropped dead! I don't know what's going on. It's a conspiracy.
Anyway...good bye, Tyres. I love you <3
