Default My budgie died :(

Today my budgie died
It was really awful, it is my sisters party today and her friend kept asking me if she could take out my budgie. I said no because there were to many people and he normally panicks if there are too many people around. Unfortunately when i went out of the room she let my budgie out, i ran round trying to shut the windows and doors so that he wouldnt fly away. However, whilst i was doing this he either crashed into some furniture and broke his neck or my sister crushed him whilst trying to catch him
I have been so upset all day
I dont know whether i ought to get another budgie or not .. i havent had much luck. Ive had the budgie that died today for 4 years and before that i had a budgie for one year who unfortunately escaped and flew away.

Do you think i should get another?

I am sorry to hear of what happened. It was very irresponsible and rude of your sister's friend to let out your bird when you specifically said not to.

I don't see why you shouldn't get another bird, you had this one for four years so you know how to look after one. You might want to think about where you are in your life right now. Will you soon be going away to school? Odds are you won't be able to take a bird with you. Are you reaching the point in your life where you will be more interested in being out with friends than being at home? Do you plan on getting a part time job while you attend school? Now would be a good time to assess where you are in life and decide if you will really have the time to look after another bird properly. In any case, give yourself time to grieve and put away all your birds stuff out of sight so you are not looking at an empty cage and feeling like you have to fill it.

I bought a budgie before I reached highschool but when I left for university I had to leave him. It was unfortunate that I didn't find him another home, I loved him but I was the only one in the family who really did. My mother was afraid of birds but she did her best to look after feeding and cleaning, but he would not have had the interaction and out of cage time he had been getting. I always feel bad that the end of his life wasn't as good as the beginning.

Again my condolences.

A good day is a day all your birds are happy and healthy.

Lottie I am very sorry for the loss of your sweet Budgie! I would be very upset at your sisters friend also and upset for the loss itself!

I don't see why you should not get another Budgie, it seems you love your Budgies very much.

Maybe next time you can put your Budgie and his cage in your bedroom and lock the door while friends are over so no one can take your Budgie out without your permission.

It was not your fault though, you did the right thing telling people to leave your Budgie in its cage, sometimes people are thoughtless as this person who let your Budgie out was.

Again I am sorry for your loss! :-)

First and foremost, Welcome to Talk Budgies.
How tragic. I am so very sorry for your loss. If you've had your budgie for 4 years now, its safe to say that you take very good care of your birds. So please dont let this tragic accident discourage you from getting another budgie. But I suggest that you let a couple of weeks pass before you get a new budgie.

Wow... i have a sister and when i was a child i would have never spoken to my sister again if that happened to me. I definitely think that you should get a new budgie and you should not let your sisters friends near it again.

Thankyou very much everyone!
Your replies have made me feel better.

I think the saddest thing about what has happened is how quiet the house is now, he was so noisy and i never really noticed how noisy he was untill he died.

I have buried him in the garden outside the window his cage was near to, and planted a special plant on his grave.

I'm so sorry for your loss. RIP little budgie.

I can't see why you shouldn't get a new budgie. You seem to love your birds very much.

How long are budgies supposed to actually live for? Did my budgie live the majority of its life or was he still a baby?
